Kitulgala is a village in the rainforest on the banks of the Kelani river, known for two things: white-water rafting, and the fact that the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai was shot here. It sits on the A7, the road that climbs from Colombo through Avissawella to Hatton and Nuwara Eliya, which makes it the natural stop between the airport and the hills: a morning on the river, then on up into the tea. Our taxi service runs every transfer at a fixed price for the whole vehicle, an economy or comfort sedan, a six-seat or an eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. You book and pay the full price online by card, so there is nothing to pay the driver on the day; paying 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver is also possible, for 10% more. Kitulgala to Colombo Airport is 85 km, about 2 h, from $47 (Rs 15,000); Kitulgala to Nuwara Eliya is 75 km, about 2 h 25, from $50 (Rs 16,000).

Kitulgala

White-water rafting on the Kelani river

Allow 3 h

Rafting is why most people stop in Kitulgala: guided trips run down a series of rapids on the Kelani river below the village, with helmets, life jackets and a briefing, and beginners are welcome. Your driver drops you at the operator’s base on the A7 and keeps the dry luggage in the car while you are on the water. Driver’s tip: water levels change with rain and upstream releases, so book the operator directly and let them decide on the day.

Best time : Morning, livelier water May to Dec

Kitulgala

Bridge on the River Kwai filming site

Allow 45 min

The 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai was shot on the Kelani at Kitulgala, and the bridge built for it was blown up in the final scene. A short path from the road leads down to the riverbank where little more than foundations remain, so come for the story and the setting rather than a monument. It fits easily between a rafting trip and the drive on. Driver’s tip: the path is muddy after rain, so wear the shoes you rafted in.

Best time : Any dry hour, after rafting

Kitulgala

Kitulgala forest reserve birdwatching

Allow 3 h

Across the Kelani from the road, the Kitulgala forest reserve is lowland rainforest with a good list of endemic birds, best walked with a local guide in the first hours of light. Staying in Kitulgala lets you be on the trail at dawn, then shower and leave for the hills by late morning while the car is already loaded. Driver’s tip: leeches come out on forest paths after rain, so tuck long socks over your trousers and carry a little salt.

Best time : Dawn, January to April

Kitulgala

Belilena cave

≈ 10 min by carAllow 1 h

Belilena, close to Kitulgala, is a prehistoric rock shelter where archaeologists found remains of some of the island’s earliest inhabitants. There is not much to see beyond the cave mouth and the forest around it, but it adds real depth to a river stop, and it is too far to reach comfortably on foot from the rafting bases. Your driver waits at the bottom of the path. Driver’s tip: go in the afternoon once rafting is over, and bring a torch for the back of the shelter.

Best time : Afternoon, a dry day

Driver for the day

Kitulgala

Aberdeen Falls

≈ 1 h by carAllow 2 h

Up the A7 towards Ginigathena, a side road leads to Aberdeen Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the area, dropping into a deep pool in a forested gorge. A path with steps goes down to the base, so plan for the climb back. From Kitulgala it makes a good stop on the way to Hatton, with the luggage staying in the car. Driver’s tip: the falls are at their fullest after rain, but never swim in the pool, the currents are strong.

Best time : Morning, after a wet spell

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) night climb

1 h 40 by car · 50 kmAllow 8 h

From Kitulgala the A7 climbs to Ginigathena, then the road turns through Hatton and Maskeliya to Dalhousie, the trailhead for Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada). Leave after a morning on the river, sleep a few hours in Dalhousie and start the climb in the small hours to reach the summit for sunrise. Driver’s tip: the lit path and tea stalls belong to the pilgrim season, from the December full moon to the May full moon; outside it, think twice.

Kitulgala

Hatton tea estates

1 h 20 by car · 40 kmAllow 3 h

Beyond the Ginigathena climb the forest gives way to tea, and Hatton is the heart of the Dickoya and Bogawantalawa estates. Leave Kitulgala after lunch and you can walk between the tea bushes, visit a working factory and reach your bungalow before dark, rather than driving the bends at night. Continue the next day towards Nuwara Eliya past St Clair’s and Devon falls. Driver’s tip: lorries slow the climb, so do not plan a tight connection with the hill-country train.

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Kitulgala?

Kitulgala has no railway station. The nearest line is the hill-country main line, which you can join at Hatton, and the old Kelani Valley line from Colombo stops well short of here. Buses are the local transport: services between Colombo, Avissawella and Hatton run along the A7 through the village all day, and the conductor will drop you at a rafting base or guesthouse if you ask. They are cheap and slow, and with luggage the change at Avissawella is awkward.

For short distances along the river, between your guesthouse, a rafting base and the film site, take a tuk-tuk; they wait in the village, and you agree the fare first. PickMe and Uber work in and around Colombo, but you will rarely find an app cab here, and a driver from Colombo will not come out for a one-way trip. The practical choice for arriving and leaving is a pre-booked cab: one price agreed in advance, a driver who knows he is going to Kitulgala, and a car that can carry wet gear and dry luggage in the same boot.

Where we pick up in Kitulgala

We collect from any guesthouse, eco-lodge or rafting base along the A7 in Kitulgala. Some lodges sit across the river or up a forest track, reached by a footbridge, a short walk or a small ferry, and a car cannot reach the door. In that case we meet you at the roadside point your lodge uses; give us the property name and we check it before the day. If you are stopping here on the way from the airport to the hills, the driver drops you at your rafting operator’s base on the road, which you book directly. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, an hour at Colombo Airport with flight tracking. The driver’s name and number reach you on WhatsApp before the day.

Getting to and from Kitulgala

Kitulgala is a string of guesthouses, rafting bases and small shops along the A7, with the river on one side and forest on the other. West, the road runs down to Avissawella and on to Colombo: the airport is 85 km, about 2 h, and Negombo 90 km, about 2 h 05. East, it climbs through Ginigathena to Hatton, 40 km and about 1 h 20, then on to Nuwara Eliya, 75 km and 2 h 25. Adam’s Peak, at Dalhousie, is 50 km, about 1 h 40 by Hatton and Maskeliya. Kandy is 60 km, about 1 h 25, and the Pinnawala elephant orphanage 55 km. South, Ratnapura, the gem town, is 65 km, about 1 h 35. Mattala airport in the south is far: 175 km, about 3 h 50. The road is narrow and winding in places, and lorries on the Ginigathena climb slow everyone down, so the times here are real driving times, not optimistic ones.

Travel tips for Kitulgala

Kitulgala is in the wet zone, and rain is part of the place in every month. The drier stretch is roughly January to April; the monsoon months bring higher water and livelier rapids, but also days when the river is closed. Rafting usually runs in the morning, so the classic plan from Colombo Airport is to arrive the evening before, raft the next morning and continue to the hills after lunch. If you want to raft on the day you land, tell us your flight: the drive is 2 h and pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, shown before you pay. Pack a dry set of clothes and a bag for wet ones. Leeches appear on forest paths after rain; long socks help. A stop of a few hours on a transfer is best arranged as two transfers, or as a day of car hire with driver on our private driver page; a short stop on the way can be set up on WhatsApp.

About Kitulgala

Rafting is why most people come. The Kelani runs through a series of rapids below the village, suitable for beginners with a guide, and several operators along the road run trips most mornings, with helmets, life jackets and a briefing. Water levels depend on rain and on what is released upstream, so trips can change at short notice after a dry spell or a storm; the operator decides on the day. Many of the same bases offer canyoning, waterfall abseiling and river swimming.

The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed on the Kelani here in the 1950s; the bridge built for the film was blown up in its final scene, and today a short path leads down to the site by the water, where little more than foundations remain. The forest around Kitulgala is part of a lowland rainforest reserve with good birdwatching, including endemic species, best with a local guide early in the morning. Belilena cave, near the village, is a prehistoric site where remains of early inhabitants of the island were found.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo Airport to Kitulgala?

From $47 (Rs 15,000) for the whole car, up to three passengers in an economy sedan. It is 85 km, about 2 h. We track your flight, and 60 minutes of waiting at arrivals are free.

How much is a taxi from Kitulgala to Nuwara Eliya?

From $50 (Rs 16,000) per vehicle, $65 (Rs 20,500) for a six-seat van. The road is 75 km up the A7 through Hatton and takes about 2 h 25.

Can we stop in Kitulgala for rafting on the way to the hills?

Yes. Book Colombo Airport to Kitulgala, raft, then Kitulgala to Hatton ($35 (Rs 11,000)) or Nuwara Eliya as a second transfer. A rafting morning lasts several hours, more than the free waiting time, so two transfers or a day with a driver works better.

Do you book the rafting?

No. You book rafting directly with an operator in Kitulgala; the driver drops you at their base on the A7 and your transfer ends there. We do not sell rafting or recommend a specific company.

How far is Kitulgala from Adam’s Peak?

The Dalhousie trailhead is 50 km, about 1 h 40 by Hatton and Maskeliya, from $44 (Rs 14,000). For the night climb, most people sleep in Dalhousie rather than drive from Kitulgala at midnight.

How much is a cab from Kitulgala to Kandy?

From $35 (Rs 11,000) per vehicle, $46 (Rs 14,500) for a van. It is 60 km, about 1 h 25. Pinnawala is 55 km, from $35 (Rs 11,000).

Is there a train or a PickMe in Kitulgala?

No station, and app cabs are rare this far from Colombo. Buses on the A7 pass through the village, and tuk-tuks cover short rides. For arriving and leaving with bags, book a transfer in advance.

How does payment work, and can we cancel?

You pay the full price by card when you book, and nothing to the driver at the river or in the hills. If you prefer, you can pay 50% online and hand the rest to the driver in cash; that option costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
