A taxi from Dambulla to Kandy is 80 km and about 1 hour 50 minutes on the A9, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. Most people make this trip after two or three days in the cultural triangle, heading for the hills and the next leg of the trip by road or by train. The drive itself is easy. What takes thought is the arrival: Kandy is a small city squeezed into a valley, its traffic peaks twice a day, and many hotels sit up steep lanes on the hillsides. Time it well and you can be checked in, showered and at the Temple of the Tooth for the evening ceremony.

Journey details

From Dambulla the driver takes the A9 south through Naula and the open, thinly settled country below the Knuckles range, then into Matale, about 55 km into the trip. The bends begin after Matale as the road climbs gently through Alawatugoda and Akurana, and you enter Kandy from the north over the Mahaweli at Katugastota. From there it depends on where you are staying: the hotels by the lake and in the old centre are a few minutes away, those on the ridges at Hantana, Ampitiya or above the lake take longer because of the narrow climbs. The driver knows these lanes and gets as close to the door as the road allows. Without stops, plan on about 1 hour 50 minutes. If you leave Dambulla early, there is time for a visit in Matale and a late lunch in Kandy.

The road

The first hour is the easy part: the A9 south of Dambulla is straight and well surfaced, with little traffic except trunk-road buses and lorries. Matale has a busy main street and a tight one-way section through the centre. The real slowdown is the last 15 km. Akurana is a long, narrow strip of shops and mosques with buses stopping on the road, and the approach to Katugastota bridge backs up from mid-afternoon. Inside Kandy, the one-way loop around the lake and the Clock Tower moves at walking pace between about 16:30 and 18:30. In July or August, during the Esala Perahera, roads in the centre close for the evening processions and some hotels can only be reached on foot for the last stretch, so the driver will plan the arrival with you on WhatsApp.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For two people, the economy sedan is fine on this road, and the comfort sedan is worth it mainly for the bigger boot and extra legroom if you are carrying souvenirs from a week of travel. Families of four or more should take the Comfort van (6 seats), or the 8-seat van for groups of seven or eight. One local detail matters more than usual here: some Kandy guesthouses sit on lanes so steep and narrow that a sedan gets closer than a van. If yours is one of them, mention it when you book and we will match the vehicle to the lane. Child seats are free on request, and the driver can help carry bags up the last few steps.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no train from Dambulla, so travellers without a car take the A9 bus towards Kandy, which is cheap and frequent but crowded, with luggage piled in the aisle. A tuk-tuk is not realistic for 80 km with bags. The interesting choice comes after Kandy: the hill-country railway to Nanu Oya and Ella starts here, and many people use this taxi to reach Kandy the afternoon before an early train. If you would rather go straight on to the tea country by road, Dambulla to Nuwara Eliya or Ella in a single day is possible, but it is a long day; arriving in Kandy first, seeing the city and travelling on the next morning is the more relaxed plan.

Best time to travel this route

Visit the Dambulla cave temple when it opens in the early morning, leave around 10:00 or 11:00, and you reach Kandy at lunchtime, ahead of the afternoon traffic. That leaves the afternoon free for the lake or the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, and the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth around 18:30. Try not to arrive between 16:30 and 18:30 on a weekday. Kandy is wettest in October and November, often with heavy afternoon rain. The Esala Perahera in July or August fills every hotel in the city, so book both the room and the car well ahead; booking more than 14 days before travel takes 5% off the fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Dambulla to Kandy?

A private taxi from Dambulla to Kandy costs $44 (LKR 14,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $50 (LKR 16,000) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $58 (LKR 18,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $70 (LKR 22,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 80 km journey, about 1 h 50 of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 5 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long does it take from Dambulla to Kandy?

About 1 hour 50 minutes for the 80 km, longer if you arrive in Kandy during the late afternoon rush, when the last few kilometres can take as long as the first fifty.

Can we get to Kandy in time for the Temple of the Tooth evening ceremony?

Yes, comfortably, if you leave Dambulla by early afternoon. The evening ceremony is around 18:30; arriving by 16:00 gives you time to check in and walk to the temple before the traffic peaks.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. The usual stops are a spice garden near Matale, the rock monastery at Aluvihare and the colourful Hindu temple in Matale town. Each one is added to your quote as a fixed amount per stop; ask when you book or on WhatsApp.

Our hotel is up a steep lane in Kandy. Can the car get there?

Usually, yes. Send the hotel name when you book. If the lane is too narrow for a van, we will suggest a sedan, or the driver stops at the nearest safe point and helps with the bags.

Is it better to take the bus?

Only if you travel light and want the lowest cost. The bus is frequent but slow at every stop and often full. The taxi is door to door and lets you stop wherever you like.

How do we pay, and what if we change plans?

The full price is paid online by card when you book; nothing is due to the driver. If you prefer, the last screen offers 50% online and the balance in cash to the driver, for a 10% higher price. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.
