Taxi in Pinnawala, private transfers at a fixed price

We collect at the door in Pinnawala, Rambukkana, Kegalle and Mawanella, and along the Kandy road either side of them. At the orphanage the vehicle waits in the car park by the ticket counters; it cannot stand on the lane between the compound and the river, which is closed to traffic twice a day while the herd crosses. Expect a few hundred metres downhill on the way in and the same back up, in open sun, with no shade on the last stretch. Bags stay locked in the car and the driver stays with it, so Pinnawala works as a halt rather than a night: most people come in from the airport or Negombo, watch a bath, and sleep in Kandy. The turn-off is at Karandupona, four or five kilometres beyond Kegalle on the Kandy side, and the last stretch runs down between rubber and areca smallholdings to the river. The A1 is the real constraint: a single carriageway lined with shops, schools and buses from Nittambuwa onwards, with Warakapola and the run through Kegalle town as the reliable chokepoints, so a hundred kilometres genuinely take two and a half hours and no driver can improve on that. This is the road the British cut through to Kandy in the 1820s and it still follows much the same line: Dawson’s tower, named for the officer who built it, stands at the top of the Kadugannawa pass, where the road climbs out of the lowlands. From the airport the usual line is the Katunayake expressway, then the outer ring road at Kadawatha, then the old Kandy road. Rambukkana station sits three kilometres away on the main line: it is where a second locomotive is coupled on for the climb to Kadugannawa.

Be clear about what this place is. Pinnawala is a captive breeding herd, not a rehabilitation project: most of the animals were born here, none are returned to the wild, bulls are kept chained and the mahouts carry hooks. The transit home at Udawalawe, five hours south, works the opposite way: orphaned calves are reared with as little human contact as possible, watched from a platform at feeding time and released into the national park in batches. If wild elephants are what you came for, that is where to go. On practicalities: the village sits about a hundred metres above sea level, so expect lowland heat rather than hill-country air, and the coach parties arrive with the ten o’clock bath. Kegalle district is wet-zone country: the south-west monsoon soaks it from May to July, the second inter-monsoon returns in October and November, and January to March is the dry window. The river shows it within hours of a storm upstream.

The river bath is the event. At about ten and again at two the herd is walked down the lane, across the public road and into the Maha Oya, where it stays for roughly two hours. The crossing itself (traffic halted, several dozen elephants filling the street) is what people remember. Calves are bottle-fed in the milk shed at fixed times set around the baths, arranged at the counter. Restaurant terraces above the water sell the view for a minimum spend, a fair trade on a day when the bank is three deep in visitors. Next door, the open zoo that opened in 2015 spreads the rest of the collection over a hillside behind moats rather than bars. And at Randeniya, a couple of kilometres off, a small mill turns elephant dung into paper, which is better than it sounds.
