A taxi from Negombo to Nuwara Eliya is 170 km and about 4 hours 10 minutes, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. It takes you from sea level to the highest town in Sri Lanka, at around 1,900 metres, in a single day: from the fishing beaches and lagoon of Negombo, where you spent your first night after landing, to cool air, tea estates and log fires in the hills. Many travellers who start in the hills rather than on the beach do exactly this, so that the long climb happens on day two, in daylight, rather than straight after an overnight flight.

Journey details
This route does not use the airport expressway. From Negombo the driver heads inland on smaller roads through coconut country towards Mirigama, and joins the A1 Colombo to Kandy road, which runs east through Warakapola, Kegalle and Mawanella. After Mawanella the road climbs the Kadugannawa pass, past Dawson Tower, to Peradeniya, home of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Here the route leaves the A1 before Kandy town and turns south onto the A5, which follows the Mahaweli valley to Gampola and then climbs steadily through Pussellawa and Ramboda, where a waterfall drops beside the road, before the last bends to the plateau and Nuwara Eliya. Without stops, plan on about 4 hours 10 minutes. A tea factory visit on the A5 or lunch at Ramboda breaks up the climb nicely. Some drivers can also go via Avissawella and Hatton on the A7, past the falls near Talawakele; it is a different view of the tea country, so ask if it interests you.
The road
The first part is easy: quiet roads out of Negombo, then the A1, which is busy with lorries and buses but flat until Mawanella. The Kadugannawa pass is the first real climb, with bends and slow lorries, and Peradeniya junction can be congested. The A5 above Gampola is the heart of the trip. It gains well over a thousand metres in bends cut into the tea slopes, with very few places where overtaking is safe, so a single loaded lorry can set the pace for everyone. From mid-afternoon, cloud often settles on the escarpment around Ramboda and visibility can drop to a few metres in minutes, which is why the driver will want to leave early. During heavy rain, small landslips can slow the upper sections. If anyone in your group gets car sick, take something before the A5 rather than when it starts, and ask to sit in front.
Recommended vehicle for this route
On a mountain road, the extra room and smoother ride of a bigger car matter more than on the coast. The economy sedan (three passengers, three bags) handles the climb well and is the lowest price on this page, but two adults with large cases will be more comfortable in the comfort sedan, which seats four with four bags. Families of four to six should take the Comfort van (6 seats), where everyone has a proper seat and the luggage travels behind, not on laps, through two hours of bends. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. Pack a jumper or jacket in your cabin bag: it is often warm when you leave Negombo and cool, sometimes cold, when you step out at Nuwara Eliya.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
The famous hill-country train does not start from Negombo. To use it you would travel to Colombo Fort or Kandy first and take the train to Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, then a tuk-tuk up to the town: a beautiful ride, but trains are often full in season and the whole journey takes most of a day with luggage. Buses mean several changes. Another plan is to break the trip in Kandy, with a night there to see the Temple of the Tooth, and continue to the hills the next morning; both legs have their own pages. A private taxi is the only way to go directly from your Negombo hotel to your Nuwara Eliya hotel, with stops when you want them.
Best time to travel this route
The hills are driest from about January to April, the best months for clear views over the tea estates. Nuwara Eliya gets rain from the south-west monsoon from about May to September, mostly as mist and drizzle, and the north-east monsoon brings heavier showers from about October to December. In April, around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the town fills with Sri Lankan visitors and hotels are expensive and full, so book early. Whatever the month, leave Negombo by 08:00 so you are on the A5 before the afternoon cloud comes down; you arrive in Nuwara Eliya in the early afternoon. Avoid starting after lunch. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off the fixed price.

How long does the drive take?
About 4 hours 10 minutes for 170 km without stops. With lunch and a tea factory visit, allow five and a half to six hours.
Which route does the driver take?
Inland from Negombo to the A1 near Mirigama, through Kegalle and up the Kadugannawa pass to Peradeniya, then south on the A5 through Gampola, Pussellawa and Ramboda to Nuwara Eliya. The route does not go through Colombo or central Kandy.
Can we stop at a tea factory or the Pinnawala elephants?
Yes. Tea factories along the A5 offer short tours and tastings, and Pinnawala is near Kegalle on the A1. Ask when you book or on WhatsApp so the driver plans the timing.

Cooler than the coast, often around 15 degrees in the afternoon and colder at night. Keep a warm layer in your hand luggage for the arrival.
Is the road safe for children who get car sick?
The road is good but has many bends above Gampola. Give children something before the climb, keep a window cracked open and ask the driver for a short stop if needed. Child seats are free.
