A taxi from Kandy to Unawatuna covers 205 km in about 4 hours 30 minutes, from the hills to the sheltered bay just past Galle, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle, expressway tolls included. Unawatuna suits people who want a calm swimming beach with Galle Fort a short tuk-tuk ride away, and it is a popular place to finish a circuit with a few lazy days. The drive is long but simple, and the part that needs local knowledge is the last kilometre: many hotels sit in narrow lanes behind the beach or on the slopes of Rumassala hill, where a driver who knows the bay saves you a lot of wandering with suitcases.

Journey details

The driver collects you from your hotel in Kandy, whether by the lake or up on the ridges, and takes the A1 west through Peradeniya and down the Kadugannawa pass towards Colombo. On the edge of the capital the car joins the expressways, normally the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city and then the Southern Expressway south, though on some days a section of the Central Expressway gives a quicker start. You leave the motorway at the Galle interchange, skirt the town and turn east onto the A2 coast road for the short final run to Unawatuna, which lies just beyond the end of Galle. Allow about 4 hours 30 minutes for the 205 km without stops. Because the fort is practically on the way, some people stop for an hour or two in Galle before checking in.

The road

The road out of Kandy is the scenic part: the Kadugannawa pass, with views back over the valleys, and then the busy towns of the A1, where patience counts more than speed. The expressway is calm and well run, with service areas for a break. At the southern end, the traffic around Galle town and its bus station is heavy at school times, and the A2 east of Galle is narrow, with buses stopping wherever they please. Unawatuna itself is a maze. The beach is reached by short lanes off the main road, some barely wide enough for one car, and hotels are spread between the bay, the slopes towards the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala, the quieter Dalawella stretch to the east and the inland roads behind. Give us the exact property name; if a lane is too tight for the vehicle, the driver stops at the nearest point and helps carry the bags.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Because of those narrow Unawatuna lanes, the sedan is often the better choice for two or three people: the economy sedan for three passengers with three bags, or the comfort sedan for a couple with large cases who want more room for four and a half hours. Families of four or more should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van; the driver will drop you at the closest point a van can reach. If your guesthouse is up a steep lane on Rumassala, mention it when you book and we will match the vehicle to the road. Child seats are free on request, and luggage stays locked in the car if you stop in Galle Fort on the way.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no station in Unawatuna itself. By rail you would take the train from Kandy to Colombo Fort, change to the coast line, ride to Galle and finish with a tuk-tuk, which makes three vehicles and most of a day, with no timed connection in Colombo. Buses also mean changing in Colombo, then again in Galle for the local service along the coast. Both work for light travellers with a day to spare. For anyone with luggage, the private taxi is the only direct option and takes about half the time, with the chance to stop in Galle Fort on the way.

Best time to travel this route

An early departure from Kandy, around 07:00 or 07:30, gets you through the A1 towns before the worst traffic and into Unawatuna by early afternoon, or into Galle Fort for a late lunch and a stroll before the last few minutes to your hotel. Arriving between about 16:30 and 18:30 means school and office traffic around Galle. The bay is at its best from about November to April, when the water is calm and clear for swimming and snorkelling. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings showers and rougher sea, although Unawatuna is more sheltered than open beaches nearby. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%.
