A private taxi from Ella to Unawatuna costs $110 (LKR 35,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $130 (LKR 40,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $145 (LKR 46,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $175 (LKR 56,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 200 km journey, about 4 h 50 of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026.

After a few days of tea estates, the Nine Arch Bridge and cool evenings, Ella to Unawatuna is the drive back down to the sea. It is also one of the longer transfers on the south side of the island: about 200 km and around four hours fifty minutes of driving, because Unawatuna sits at the western end of the southern beaches, just past Galle, rather than on the nearer stretch around Tangalle or Mirissa. Much of the second half is expressway, so the day is long but not hard. An Ella to Unawatuna taxi is the simplest way to make the move: one car, all your bags, no changes.

Journey details

The day starts with the descent. From Ella the road drops past Ravana Falls to Wellawaya, and within an hour you have lost most of the altitude and the air is noticeably warmer. From Wellawaya the car crosses the dry lowlands towards the coast, either directly or past Udawalawe if you want to see elephants, and joins the Southern Expressway (E01) in the Hambantota district. The expressway then carries you west past Matara to the Galle interchange, and from there it is a short drive round the edge of Galle to Unawatuna. Allow around four hours fifty without stops for roughly 200 km, and closer to six hours with lunch and a break.

The road

Going down from Ella is easier on the stomach than going up, but it is the part of the day that needs the most care: hairpins, buses coming up on the inside of the bends, and tarmac that can be wet in the morning when the cloud is sitting on the hills. Below Wellawaya the road opens out, and on the Udawalawe option you pass the reservoir where elephants often stand along the park fence. The expressway is the calmest part of the journey. At the Unawatuna end, the road through Galle can be slow at school and office times, and several guesthouses sit on narrow lanes behind the beach or up the hill towards Rumassala, where a van has to stop short and the last few metres are on foot. Give us the exact property name so the drop-off is planned rather than improvised.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Two travellers with backpacks are fine in the economy sedan, which takes up to three passengers, handles the descent easily and fits the narrow lanes around Unawatuna. With larger cases, or if you want room to doze through part of a five-hour drive, the comfort sedan is the better choice. For families and small groups, the 6-seat van gives everyone a window and keeps the luggage out of the cabin, and the 8-seat van covers seven or eight passengers. The one thing to think about on this route is the drop-off rather than the road: if your guesthouse is down a sandy lane, the smaller vehicle gets closer to the door.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no rail link between Ella and the south coast. The Ella line runs north-west into the hills towards Kandy and Colombo, and from Colombo you would take the coast line back down to Galle, which turns one day into two. Buses run from Ella and Wellawaya towards Matara, and from Matara on to Galle, but that means at least two changes, crowded aisles and no real space for large luggage. Some travellers split the trip with a night near Udawalawe or on the coast at Tangalle or Mirissa, which makes sense if you want a safari; we can price each leg separately. For a straight run from the hills to Unawatuna, a private cab is the practical answer, at a fixed price that already includes fuel, tolls, parking and the driver.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Ella around 08:00. The descent is best done in daylight, the plains are more pleasant in the morning than after lunch, and you reach Unawatuna in the middle of the afternoon with time for a swim. The sea on this coast is at its calmest from December to April; from May to September the south-west monsoon brings rougher water and passing showers. October to December is the wettest period in the hills, when the first hour of the drive can be slower. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season supplement applies, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off the price.

How long is the drive from Ella to Unawatuna?

About 200 km and around four hours fifty minutes of driving. Add an hour for lunch and a break. The first hour is the mountain descent, and much of the rest is expressway.

Is Unawatuna further from Ella than Mirissa?

Yes. Unawatuna is at the western end of the southern beaches, next to Galle, so it is roughly 35 km further than Mirissa. The expressway makes most of that extra distance quick.

Can we do an Udawalawe safari on the way?

It is possible but makes a very long day: a half-day jeep drive plus nearly five hours on the road. The jeep is booked separately, and the car can wait with your luggage at the jeep office if this is arranged in advance on WhatsApp as an extra stop. Many people prefer a night near the park.

Is there a bus or train instead?

No train goes from Ella to the south coast. Buses need at least two changes and have little space for big luggage.

Will the car reach our guesthouse?

Usually, yes. Some places in Unawatuna are on narrow lanes behind the beach or up towards Rumassala. Send us the property name and we plan the drop-off; with a van, the last few metres can be on foot.

What is included in the price, and can we cancel?

The price is per vehicle and fixed before you book: fuel, tolls, parking and the driver are included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. You pay the full price by card online, with nothing to hand the driver, or 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver for 10% more.
