A taxi from Negombo to Unawatuna covers 160 km in about 2 hours 45 minutes, in a private car with an English-speaking driver, at a fixed price per vehicle that includes the expressway tolls. Unawatuna is the sheltered, horseshoe bay just beyond Galle, with calm water for swimming in season, Jungle Beach hidden behind the Rumassala headland, and the old Dutch fort a few minutes away. After a first night in Negombo, close to the airport, this transfer takes you right across the west of the island in a single morning, and because Galle Fort sits on the way, it is easy to make the arrival day count.

Journey details

The driver picks you up at your Negombo hotel and joins the E03 at Katunayake, heading south. At Kerawalapitiya he turns onto the E02 Outer Circular Expressway, which bypasses Colombo through Kadawatha and Kaduwela, and at Kottawa joins the E01 Southern Expressway. The E01 runs south through the interior for about an hour and a half, well inland from the beaches, with a service area at Welipenna. You leave at the Pinnaduwa interchange, the Galle exit, and drive down into Galle past the cricket stadium. From there it is about six kilometres east along the A2 to Unawatuna, where the road drops down towards the bay. Without stops, allow about 2 hours 45 minutes. The natural stop is Galle Fort: an hour on the ramparts or a lunch inside the walls adds little distance, and your luggage stays locked in the car. If you are staying at Dalawella or near Thalpe, south of the bay, tell us, as the driver continues a little further along the coast.

The road

The expressways carry almost the whole trip and are fast at any hour, with tolls included in your price. The first kilometres in Negombo are the slowest per kilometre on weekday mornings, and the Outer Circular can queue near Kadawatha and Kottawa in the Colombo rush. At the far end, the approach to Galle past the bus stand and the stadium is the busiest junction in the south, and the A2 east of Galle is a narrow coast road with buses, tuk-tuks and parked delivery vans. Unawatuna itself was a fishing village before it was a resort: the road around the bay is narrow and partly one-way, the beachfront is closed to cars, and several guesthouses are reached on foot for the last fifty metres or so. Give us the exact property name, and the driver will choose the approach with the shortest walk.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For a couple, the economy sedan (three passengers, three bags) is enough on these smooth roads and is the lowest price shown. If you have two large suitcases plus cabin bags, as most people do on day two of a long trip, the comfort sedan (four passengers, four bags) gives the extra boot space you need. Families of four to six should take the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. In Unawatuna's narrowest lanes a sedan gets slightly closer than a van, but every vehicle can reach the main road above the bay and the driver will help with bags. Child seats are free on request, and divers can bring their kit in any car with enough boot space.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no direct public transport. By train you would go from Negombo to Colombo Fort, change, ride the coastal line to Galle, and then take a tuk-tuk to Unawatuna: three stages, a full day, and suitcases on crowded platforms. Expressway buses to Galle leave from the Colombo side, so they also need a first leg. Ride-hailing apps cover Negombo, but the fare for a long trip changes with demand and some drivers refuse it. For travellers who prefer not to stop in Negombo, the direct transfer from the airport to Unawatuna has its own page, with a name-board welcome in the arrivals hall and 60 minutes of free waiting.

Best time to travel this route

Unawatuna is at its best from about November to April, when the bay is calm and clear for swimming and snorkelling and Jungle Beach is busy with boats. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings wind, waves and passing showers, and the bay is rougher, although the protected shape keeps it swimmable on many days. Leave Negombo around 09:00 to miss the morning traffic and you reach Galle by late morning, perfect for a walk in the fort before the midday heat and check-in in Unawatuna mid-afternoon. Avoid Friday evenings and holiday weekends on the Southern Expressway. Night pickups or arrivals between 22:00 and 05:00 add 15%, high season from 15 December to 15 January adds 10%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Negombo to Unawatuna?

A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long does it take?

About 2 hours 45 minutes for 160 km without stops. With an hour in Galle Fort, plan on four hours door to door.

Can we stop in Galle Fort on the way?

Yes, it is right on the route from the expressway to Unawatuna. Mention it when you book; the driver waits while you walk and your bags stay in the car.

Does the car reach the guesthouses on the beach?

The beachfront itself is closed to cars, so some guesthouses are a short walk from the nearest point the car can reach. Give us the exact name and the driver will take the closest approach.

Do we go through Colombo?

No. The route uses the E03, the E02 Outer Circular around the city and the E01 Southern Expressway, so central Colombo is avoided completely.

Can you take us from the airport rather than Negombo?

Yes. The airport to Unawatuna transfer is a separate page, with flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting in the arrivals hall.

How do we pay?

Pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to pay the driver; or pay 50% online and the rest in cash, which costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
