Taxi from Mirissa to Colombo Airport, fixed price private transfer

A short run east on the A2 to the Godagama interchange, then the E01 and E03 north. One hundred and seventy-five kilometres, three hours, tolls inside the quoted price. For a 01:30 departure the pickup falls around 19:00; for a 15:00 flight, around 08:30. The expressway carries almost the whole journey and does not queue, so the figure is dependable to within a few minutes at any hour.

Mirissa’s beach accommodation is reached by a handful of unnamed lanes running south off the A2, several of them sand rather than tarmac and narrow enough that two vehicles cannot pass. Vans reach most properties but not all, and a few of the smaller guesthouses behind the beach have no vehicle access for the last fifty metres. The two ends of the bay, the harbour side and the Parrot Rock side, are a fifteen-minute walk apart and not obvious from a booking confirmation, so the property name is the only address that works. In the south-west monsoon those sand lanes soften and a loaded van will stop at the tarmac and let you walk the rest.

Three hours on smooth road, so the choice is space and access rather than ride quality. For two people the economy sedan is right and, in the lanes behind the beach, it gets closer to the door than anything larger. For four with luggage the comfort sedan, which takes a case each; for five or six the comfort van, accepting that it may stop short of some properties. Surfboards from neighbouring Weligama need the van with a row folded. As everywhere on a return leg, the honest question is whether your luggage has grown; if you arrived with a full boot, book one size up rather than solve it at dawn.

The coastal train from Matara, twenty minutes east by tuk-tuk, is slow, cheap and lovely, and it goes to Colombo Fort rather than the airport. As a departure plan it asks you to solve thirty-five kilometres at the far end, at whatever hour you arrive. Expressway buses from Matara are quicker with the same gap. Neither belongs on the day of a flight. Earlier in a trip, going north to Galle or Colombo, the train is genuinely the better experience and costs a tenth as much.

The road works at any hour and night departures are quickest, with a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. The season matters for what you do before you leave rather than for the drive: whale boats run roughly November to April and leave at 06:30, and the sensible rule is to keep a full day between the last boat and the flight. The dry season here is December to April; from May to September the swell is up, the boats stop and the town is quiet. With a late flight and a morning check-out, the car can collect you, stop at Galle Fort on the way north, and still reach the terminal with the buffer intact.
