East to Dambulla, then the A6 south-west through Kurunegala, then the E03 to the terminal. One hundred and fifty kilometres, three hours thirty, tolls included on the expressway section. For a 01:30 flight the pickup falls around 18:30; for a 14:00 departure, around 07:00, which rules out the rock that morning. Sigiriya opens at 07:00 and the climb takes two to three hours including the queue, so a same-day climb needs a flight after about 18:00.

The first fifteen kilometres, from Sigiriya to Dambulla, cross open scrub where wild elephants are a genuine presence at dawn and dusk, and the crossing signs on the Habarana and Sigiriya roads are not decorative. On an early departure your driver will take the main road rather than the shorter track past the tank. At Dambulla the junction carries lorry traffic from the island’s largest wholesale vegetable market, which runs overnight, so between midnight and six it is busy and slow in a way it never is at noon. Further on, the A6 passes through the centre of Kurunegala, where the one-way ring around the clock tower costs ten to fifteen minutes in the middle of the day.

Three and a half hours on straight roads, so the choice is space rather than handling. The economy sedan is genuinely fine for two and the comfort sedan for four; the comfort van for five or more, and it is what most larger parties touring the triangle already have. Worth knowing on a departure: if you have kept the same driver for two or three days of sightseeing, extending that booking to the airport is cheaper and simpler than arranging a separate transfer, and it means the vehicle that holds your luggage today is the one taking it tomorrow. Say so before the last day rather than on it.

There is no useful train from Sigiriya; the nearest line serves Habarana with poor connections, and reaching Colombo by rail from here is most of a day. Buses run to Dambulla and then on to Colombo, cheaply and slowly, and leave you at a city bus station with thirty-five kilometres and your luggage still to solve. For a flight there is no honest alternative to the road, which is why every visitor to the cultural triangle arrives and leaves by car.

Any hour works and the road barely varies. Night departures are quicker except through Dambulla junction, where the overnight market slows things; a surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00. Daytime departures should avoid arriving at Kurunegala between noon and two. May to September is the dry, hot season in the triangle and the best time to be here; the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from November into December, which makes the rock climb slippery but has little effect on the drive. The Dambulla cave temple is directly on the route and adds about an hour including the climb, which fits neatly before an evening flight.
