West on the A11 through Habarana to Dambulla, then the A6 south-west through Kurunegala, then the E03 to the terminal. One hundred and ninety-five kilometres, about four hours ten. For a 01:30 flight the pickup falls around 17:50; for a 10:00 departure, around 02:20. This is dry-zone driving through scrub and paddy, flat and quiet, with Kurunegala the only urban slowdown of consequence.

The first stretch, from Polonnaruwa west to Habarana, runs along the boundaries of Minneriya and Kaudulla, and elephants cross it. At dusk that is routine rather than exceptional, and it is the practical reason to leave in daylight where the flight allows. The town itself is two places, which matters for a pickup: the old town near the archaeological park and the tank, and Kaduruwela, the commercial centre four kilometres east where most of the shops and the bus station are. Hotels exist in both. Give us the property name rather than the town, particularly for an early departure when there is nobody about to ask. One further detail worth knowing: the road along the bund of the Parakrama Samudra is the pleasant way out of town and drivers take it in daylight, but it is unlit and shared with cyclists at dawn, so an early pickup leaves by the main road instead.

Four hours of flat, good road, so this is a comfort and heat decision. Polonnaruwa is among the warmest places on the island and air conditioning is not optional in the middle of the day. For two people the comfort sedan over the economy car is worth it at this length; for four with luggage the comfort sedan, and for five or six the comfort van. As elsewhere in the triangle, if a vehicle and driver have carried you around the circuit for several days, extending that booking to the airport is cheaper than starting a new one and avoids repacking two cars on the last morning.

There is a station at Polonnaruwa on the Batticaloa line and the run to Colombo is long, slow and infrequent, ending at Fort with thirty-five kilometres still to arrange. Buses mean a change at Dambulla or Habarana and most of a day with luggage. This is the clearest case on our network of a destination where the private car is the only realistic way in and out, and it is the reason Polonnaruwa remains as quiet as it does. The honest comparison is not with another mode of transport but with a different itinerary: people who want to reach the airport by rail from this side of the island generally move to Habarana or Anuradhapura the day before, which costs a night and solves nothing that the direct car does not already solve.

Leave in daylight if you can, for the elephants on the Habarana stretch. Night departures are quicker on the open road but slower through Dambulla junction, where the overnight vegetable market trades between midnight and six; a surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00. May to September is the dry season and the best time to be here. If you are seeing the ruins on your last morning, do it between opening and about nine: there is very little shade in the park and the middle of the day is punishing, and bicycles are rented at the entrance.
