Taxi from Colombo Airport to Sigiriya, fixed price private transfer

The route runs E03 to Colombo’s northern edge, joins the A6 through Kurunegala, and continues to Dambulla before the short hop east to Sigiriya. About 150 km and three and a half hours. The A6 is a good two-lane road for most of its length with long straight sections through coconut country, and the driving is far easier than on any hill-country route. This is a hot, low-altitude journey: the cultural triangle is consistently the warmest part of the country, and the temperature difference from the airport is noticeable by Kurunegala.

The A6 is fast by Sri Lankan standards but it passes through the centre of Kurunegala, where the ring of one-way streets around the clock tower can cost fifteen minutes in the middle of the day. Beyond Dambulla the road narrows and the last 15 km to Sigiriya crosses open scrub where wild elephants are a genuine presence at dusk, the Habarana and Sigiriya roads have signed elephant crossings and they are not decorative. We do not drive that section fast after dark, and if you are arriving in the evening your driver will take the main road rather than the shorter track past the tank.

Three and a half hours on mostly straight roads makes this an easy transfer for any vehicle, so choose on space rather than handling. The comfort van is our default for five or more, because cultural triangle hotels are spread out and the same vehicle is often kept for the following day’s sightseeing between Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. There is no useful train to Sigiriya, the nearest line serves Habarana and the connections are poor. Buses run to Dambulla from Colombo and require a change plus a tuk-tuk for the final 20 km, which with luggage is a long afternoon. For this destination the private transfer is not a comfort upgrade, it is the practical option, and it is why almost every visitor to Sigiriya arrives by car.

Leave the airport as early as the flight allows. Arriving in Sigiriya before 15:00 gives you the sunset from Pidurangala, which is the better vantage point over the rock and a fraction of the price. Avoid arriving after dark if you can, both for the elephants and because hotel access roads out here are unlit gravel. The cultural triangle is driest and hottest from May to September; the north-east monsoon in November and December brings heavy rain that makes the rock climb slippery but has little effect on the drive.
