This is the drive most people make after a morning safari: back from the park in the middle of the morning, a shower and a late breakfast, then about 90 km and roughly two hours twenty minutes up into the hills. You leave the dry heat of the lowlands and arrive in Ella, well over 800 metres higher, in time for a walk before dark. An Udawalawe to Ella taxi picks you up at your lodge or straight from the jeep office, with your bags already on board if you checked out before the safari.

Journey details

From Udawalawe the car follows the reservoir along the park boundary, then heads east through Thanamalvila across flat country to Wellawaya. That half is easy and fairly quick. From Wellawaya the road starts climbing, and the final 25 km or so to Ella are a steady series of bends past Ravana Falls, which sits beside the road a few kilometres below the village and makes a natural pause. Allow about two hours twenty for around 90 km without stops, and a little under three hours with the waterfall and a tea break. Drop-off is at your guesthouse, whether in the village, on the Passara road or up towards Little Adam's Peak; some properties are on steep lanes, so tell us the name when you book.

The road

Uphill is the kinder direction for anyone who suffers on bends: the car climbs slowly, the driver brakes less, and the views open up behind you. The road above Wellawaya is narrow and shared with buses and lorries, and in the rainy months small landslips can hold up traffic for a while. Down in the lowlands the hazards are different: tractors, cattle, and elephants near the reservoir, most active in the early morning and late afternoon. If you set off after a morning safari you cross that stretch in full daylight. Bring a layer within reach rather than in the boot. Ella is noticeably cooler than Udawalawe, and after a morning in lowland heat the change is sharper than people expect, especially if you arrive under cloud.

Recommended vehicle for this route

After a start before dawn and half a day in an open jeep, comfort matters more than on a normal short transfer. The comfort sedan is the pick for two or three travellers: softer on the climb, and quiet enough to sleep through the flat part. The economy sedan is fine for up to three with light bags. Families should take the 6-seat van, where children get their own window for the bends, and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Whatever the vehicle, if the jeep collects you from the hotel, check out before the safari and leave the bags at reception, so the car can load them without anyone having to wait.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

No train serves Udawalawe. Buses run from Udawalawe towards Wellawaya, where you change for Ella, and that is workable with a backpack and a flexible afternoon; with suitcases and the midday heat, it is a long way round to save money. If you came to Udawalawe from Ella on a day trip, this transfer is the return half, and many guesthouses in Ella organise exactly that. If you are travelling up from the coast, there is another option: go directly from Galle or Mirissa to Ella with the safari as a stop in between, which we arrange as an extra stop on WhatsApp. Either way, a private cab gives you a fixed price per vehicle, fuel, parking and driver included.

Best time to travel this route

Leave between 10:00 and 11:00, once you are back from the morning safari and packed. You reach Ella early in the afternoon, which leaves time for Little Adam's Peak before sunset or an evening look at the Nine Arch Bridge, and you avoid doing the climb in the dark, as it is unlit. After an afternoon safari, the drive puts you in Ella after nightfall: safe with a driver who knows the road, but slower, and you see nothing of the hills. Rain in the hills is heaviest from October to December, when a cloudy afternoon is likely; January to April usually gives the clearest arrivals. A 10% supplement applies from 15 December to 15 January, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long does the taxi from Udawalawe to Ella take?

Around two hours twenty minutes for about 90 km. The first half is flat; the last 25 km or so climb from Wellawaya to Ella.

Can you pick us up from the jeep office after the safari?

Yes. Give us the office and an estimated return time, and the driver will be there; the first 15 minutes of waiting are free. If your bags are still at the lodge, tell us on WhatsApp and we plan the collection.

Can we stop at Ravana Falls?

Yes. It is right beside the road below Ella, and 15 to 20 minutes is enough. The Buduruwagala rock carvings near Wellawaya need a short side road and around 45 minutes; ask for them when you book.

Will it be cold in Ella?

Not cold, but noticeably cooler than Udawalawe, especially in the evening. A light jumper is enough for most of the year.

Can the driver take us to the Nine Arch Bridge after the drop-off?

The transfer ends at your guesthouse. The bridge and Little Adam's Peak are close to the village and easy on foot or by tuk-tuk, but a stop on the way in can be added if arranged beforehand on WhatsApp.

Is the price fixed, and how do we pay?

Yes, per vehicle and shown before you book, with fuel, parking and the driver included. You pay that price in full by card online, so the driver collects nothing; or 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, which costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
