Udawalawe is where most travellers staying in Ella go to see elephants, and the transfer is short enough to build a day around: about 90 km and around two hours twenty minutes of driving. The drive itself is simple. What needs thought is the timing, because an Ella to Udawalawe taxi is usually tied to a jeep safari that starts at a fixed hour, and to what you do afterwards: spend the night by the park, or carry on to the south coast the same day.

Journey details

From Ella the road winds down past Ravana Falls to Wellawaya, which takes about an hour and contains nearly all the bends of the day. After Wellawaya you are in the lowlands, and the car heads west through Thanamalvila across flat, drier country towards Udawalawe. The last part runs along the reservoir at the edge of the park, where the fence is close to the road and elephants are often in sight before you reach the entrance. Around 90 km in total, about two hours twenty without stops. The car can drop you at your hotel, at a lodge on the Thanamalvila road, or directly at a jeep office near the park entrance if you are going straight into a safari.

The road

The Wellawaya descent is the only demanding part: tight bends, buses taking the racing line, and wet tarmac in the morning if the cloud is down. After that the road is flat, but it passes through villages and farmland, so the speed stays moderate. The stretch beside the reservoir is the one that surprises people. Elephants come right up to the electric fence along the road, and some have learnt to wait there for food from passing cars. Feeding them is harmful and makes them bolder, so your driver will slow down for photographs but will not stop for handouts. If you are going into a safari straight from the car, the jeep office is the handover point: the jeep takes you into the park, and the car stays outside, because only registered safari jeeps are allowed in.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For a straight transfer to your hotel, choose as usual: the economy sedan for up to three passengers with light bags, the comfort sedan for two or three with proper suitcases, the 6-seat van for families, the 8-seat van for groups of seven or eight. The choice matters more if you are combining a safari and the south coast in one day, because the car becomes your left-luggage room while you are in the park. In that case pick a vehicle where the bags fit in the boot rather than on the seats, and consider the comfort sedan or a van for the second leg, which comes after an early start and a dusty jeep ride, when a quiet cabin and space to sleep are worth having.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

Buses run from Ella down to Wellawaya, and from there you need another bus on towards Udawalawe; it works, but the timing will not match a safari start and there is little room for luggage. Many Ella guesthouses sell day trips to Udawalawe that bring you back to Ella the same evening. That suits you if you are staying on in the hills, and in that case the Udawalawe to Ella transfer is the other half of your day. If you are leaving Ella for good, the more efficient plan is one-way: cab to Udawalawe, safari, then either a night by the park or on to the coast. We can arrange Ella to Udawalawe with the car waiting during an afternoon safari and then continuing to Mirissa or Unawatuna, as an extra stop agreed on WhatsApp before the day.

Best time to travel this route

Work backwards from the jeep. Morning safaris start around 06:00, so reaching the park for one from Ella means leaving at about half past three, which falls in the night-surcharge window (15% for pickups between 22:00 and 05:00) and makes for a very short night. Most people either sleep near the park and go in at dawn, or leave Ella after breakfast, around 10:00, arrive at lunchtime and take an afternoon safari. The park is open all year and the elephants are there in every season, so the time of day matters more than the month. October to December is the wettest period in the hills, when the descent can be slower. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season supplement applies.

How far is Udawalawe from Ella?

About 90 km, around two hours twenty minutes by car. The first hour is the descent to Wellawaya; the rest is flat lowland road.

Can you take us on the safari?

No. Only registered safari jeeps go into Udawalawe National Park, and they are booked separately, through your hotel or at the jeep offices near the entrance. We drop you at the hotel or directly at the jeep office.

Can the driver wait during the safari and then take us on to the coast?

Yes, if it is arranged in advance as an extra stop on WhatsApp. Your luggage stays locked in the car, and the driver continues to Mirissa, Unawatuna or elsewhere once you are back from the park.

What time should we leave Ella?

For an afternoon safari, around 10:00. For a morning safari, about half past three, which carries the 15% night surcharge; for that one most people prefer to sleep near the park the night before.

Will we see elephants from the road?

Often, along the reservoir at the edge of the park, where they come to the fence. It is not guaranteed, and the driver will slow down for you but will not stop so that anyone can feed them.

How do we pay?

You pay the full price by card online when you book and we confirm on WhatsApp; nothing is owed to the driver in Udawalawe. Paying 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver is also possible, at 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
