A taxi from Weligama to Ella covers 185 km in about 4 hours 30 minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, with an English-speaking driver who knows every bend of the climb. Weligama's long sandy bay is where a great many people learn to surf, and plenty of them book this transfer at the end of a surf week to spend a few days walking through tea estates instead. The route is simple: a short hop inland to the Southern Expressway, a fast run east, the open dry plains, and then the steep climb through the Ella Gap. Because the sea at Weligama is usually at its best early in the day, the trip fits neatly after a last dawn session: in the water at sunrise, on the road by mid-morning, and in Ella with plenty of light left for a first walk.

Journey details
Pickup is at your hotel, surf camp or guesthouse anywhere around the bay, from the town end near Taprobane island to the quieter stretch towards Mirissa. The driver takes a short country road inland to the expressway interchange, then heads east on the E01 through low green country of rubber, cinnamon and paddy, which turns drier as you pass into the Hambantota district. At the eastern end of the motorway the route follows the A2 north through Wirawila, where a large tank beside the road is often busy with egrets, storks and pelicans, then on through Thanamalwila and Kuda Oya, with the line of the hills rising slowly ahead. At Wellawaya the road turns on to the A23 and climbs through the Ella Gap, past Ravana Falls, to the village. Without stops, allow about 4 hours 30 minutes. If you would rather see elephants, the driver can take the inland road through Embilipitiya and past the Udawalawe reservoir instead; the driving time is similar, and a stop there adds an hour or more.
The road
Weligama's main street is the A2 coast road, narrow through the town, with buses pulling in at every stand and fish lorries around the harbour in the morning, so the first ten minutes are the slowest of the day. The expressway then does most of the work; there are service areas for coffee and toilets, and the tolls are already in the price. The A2 north of Hambantota is a good road across flat country, but drivers stay alert: it skirts protected scrub where elephants sometimes cross, especially towards dusk, and cattle like to lie on the warm tarmac. The real test is the A23 from Wellawaya, a sequence of blind hairpins up the escarpment, with buses taking the inside line downhill. In the wetter months, fog can settle on the upper section in the afternoon and cut visibility to a few car lengths. In Ella the main street is crowded with tuk-tuks late in the day, and many guesthouses sit up steep lanes towards Ella Rock or the Nine Arch Bridge.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Surf travellers are the reason we ask questions before this trip. If you have your own board, give us its length when you book so we send a vehicle it fits inside; boards never go on the roof, and a longboard usually means a van. Wetsuits and fins travel fine in a bag in the boot, sand and all. Without boards, the choice is the usual one: the economy sedan for up to three passengers with three bags, the comfort sedan for a couple with large cases who want more legroom over four and a half hours, the Comfort van (6 seats) for families and small groups, and the 8-seat van for seven or eight. Child seats are free on request. Keep sun cream and a hat handy for any stop on the plains, and a warm layer for the evening in Ella.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
No railway reaches Ella from the south. Weligama station is on the coast line, which runs north to Colombo, and the Ella line climbs from Colombo through Kandy, so going by train means two long days. Buses from Weligama run to Matara, where you change for Wellawaya or Tissamaharama and then change again for Ella; with a surfboard it is close to impossible. Some people combine the move with Yala: Weligama to Tissamaharama, a dawn safari, then Tissamaharama to Ella the next day, each booked as its own transfer. Tuk-tuks and PickMe are fine for getting around the bay, but not for a run into the hills. For a straight move from the surf to the tea country, the taxi is the only direct way.
Best time to travel this route
Surf first, travel second: leave Weligama between 09:00 and 10:00 and you reach Ella around the middle of the afternoon, with daylight to spare. Try not to leave much after 11:00, which puts the Ella Gap climb into the late-afternoon fog of the wetter months and an arrival close to dusk. The surf season on the south coast runs from about November to April, with gentle waves for beginners in the bay. From May to September the south-west monsoon makes the sea big and messy, while Ella is often in its drier spell, a good reason to head inland then. From about October to January the hills catch the north-east monsoon, so expect heavier rain on the climb. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%.

How long is the drive from Weligama to Ella?
It is 185 km and about 4 hours 30 minutes without stops. Allow five and a half hours with a lunch break, a little more with a stop at Udawalawe.
Can we surf in the morning and leave afterwards?
Yes, that is the plan we suggest. A pickup between 09:00 and 10:00 gets you to Ella by mid-afternoon. The driver waits 15 minutes at no charge if you are still rinsing off.
Can you carry my surfboard?
Yes, inside the vehicle. Tell us the length and the number of boards when you book, and we send a car or van they fit in.

Yes. The driver takes the inland road through Embilipitiya, where elephants are often seen along the park fence. A stop at the Elephant Transit Home is added to your quote as an extra stop; ask when you book or on WhatsApp.
Is there a train from Weligama to Ella?
No. The coast line goes north to Colombo and the hill line starts from there, so the rail route takes two days.
