Journey details
From Weligama the driver heads inland and joins the E01 Southern Expressway at the Kokmaduwa interchange, or at Godagama if your hotel is at the Mirissa end of the bay. The motorway then runs north for most of the distance, through low hills of rubber and tea smallholdings, inland of Galle, Hikkaduwa and Bentota, with a service area at Welipenna for a break. Where the car leaves the expressway depends on your address. For Mount Lavinia, Dehiwala or Wellawatte, the driver often exits before the end and crosses west to the Galle Road. For Colombo 5, 7, Borella or Fort, he stays on to Kottawa, where the E01 ends, and drives in through the suburbs. Either way, plan on about 2 hours 25 minutes without stops.
The road
Weligama’s hotels and surf camps line the bay on both sides of the A2, with the railway running just behind, and the stretch near the fish market at the eastern end is congested in the morning while the catch is landed and sold. Getting onto the expressway takes a few minutes of country road. The E01 itself is the easy part: two lanes each way, a 100 km/h limit, no tuk-tuks or crossroads, and tolls already in your price. The harder part is Colombo. At Kottawa all the southbound and northbound traffic meets the city roads, and on weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons, when weekenders return from the south, the last few kilometres into the city can be slower than the whole motorway run. In the city, one-way streets and security cordons around some government buildings mean the driver may reach your hotel by a roundabout route.
Recommended vehicle for this route
On a motorway every car rides smoothly, so choose for space. One to three people with three bags fit in the economy sedan. If you are four, or you are taking home a surfboard bought in Weligama, the comfort sedan takes four passengers and four bags, though a long board needs a van; tell us its length when you book. Families or groups of five or six should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and seven or eight the 8-seat van. Business travellers heading to a meeting often prefer the comfort sedan for its quieter cabin and room to work. Child seats are free on request, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Weligama is on the coastal railway, and the train to Colombo Fort is a beautiful, slow ride along the shore, cheap, crowded at weekends and good if you travel light and your hotel is near Fort or on the line. Air-conditioned expressway buses run from the south to Makumbura, near Kottawa, which leaves you on the edge of the city with your bags. Ride-hailing apps are useful once you are in Colombo but unreliable for a pickup in Weligama. If you want to see more of the coast on the way, the driver can take the old A2 west through Ahangama and Koggala, past the stilt fishermen, and join the expressway at Galle, or stop at Galle Fort for lunch; ask when you book.
Best time to travel this route
Plan the arrival in Colombo, not the departure from Weligama. Leaving after the morning surf session, around 10:00, brings you into the city in the early afternoon, between the two rush hours. Avoid arriving between about 16:30 and 19:30 on weekdays, and on Sunday afternoons, when the expressway fills with people returning from the south coast. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy showers to both Weligama and Colombo, which can flood low city streets for an hour or so; from December to April the weather is dry and settled. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

About 2 hours 25 minutes for the 140 km on the E01 Southern Expressway. In the evening rush or on Sunday afternoons, the city end can add time.
Is this the right page for Colombo airport?
No. This page goes to Colombo city. Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, north of the city, and Weligama to the airport has its own page and price.
Can you take a surfboard?
Yes. Short boards fit in most vehicles; longer boards need a van. Give us the board length when you book so the right vehicle comes.
Can we stop in Galle on the way?
Yes. Galle Fort is close to the expressway and makes a good lunch stop. A planned stop is added to your quote; arrange it when you book or on WhatsApp.
Train or taxi?
The coastal train is scenic and cheap but slow, often full at weekends, and ends at Fort station. The taxi is about 2 hours 25 minutes and goes straight to your hotel door.
