Prices checked on 5 October 2026.

A taxi from Arugam Bay to Kandy covers 200 km in about 4 hours 20 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver, at a fixed price per vehicle. It is the drive most surfers and travellers make when they leave the east coast and head back into the hills, either to continue the classic loop through Kandy and the cultural triangle or to catch a flight home after a few days in the city. There is no train and no direct bus, and the road crosses some of the emptiest country on the island, so a driver who knows it, and knows when to cross the elephant stretch, makes the day much simpler.

Journey details

The driver collects you from your guesthouse or hotel in Arugam Bay, whether it is at the point, along the main road or towards Pottuvil, and heads north to Pottuvil and then west on the A4. The road runs past the reservoirs of Lahugala National Park to Siyambalanduwa and on to Moneragala, the main town of the region. From Moneragala the route turns north through Bibile, among forest, teak and sugar cane, to Mahiyangana on the Mahaweli river, where a large white stupa marks one of the oldest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka. After Mahiyangana the A26 begins the climb into the hills through the 18 hairpin bends to Hunnasgiriya, then continues through Teldeniya and Digana, past the Victoria reservoir, and enters Kandy from the east. Without stops, allow about 4 hours 20 minutes. Lunch in Moneragala or Mahiyangana is the natural break. Give the exact name of your hotel in Kandy, as many sit on steep lanes above the lake or out at Digana and Ampitiya.

The road

The first hour is the stretch to plan around. Between Pottuvil and Siyambalanduwa the A4 passes Lahugala, where wild elephants feed around the reservoirs beside the road, especially at dawn and in the late afternoon. Drivers slow down, keep their distance and never get out; leaving after full daylight, around 07:00 to 08:00, is the safest choice. From Moneragala to Mahiyangana the roads are quiet, narrow two-lane roads through villages, with cattle, cyclists and tractors. The 18 bends after Mahiyangana are taken uphill in this direction, slowly behind buses and lorries in low gear, with wide views back over the plains. The last obstacle is Kandy itself: the Digana road and the one-way system around the lake slow to walking pace on weekday afternoons from about 16:30 to 18:30.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Most people leaving Arugam Bay carry more than they arrived with: boards, wetsuits and bags of sandy clothes. For one or two people without boards, the economy sedan (three passengers, three bags) is enough and is the lowest price on this page. Surfers should book the Comfort van (6 seats), where boards travel flat inside the vehicle rather than wedged across a sedan, and nothing has to go on the roof. Couples with two large cases are more comfortable in the comfort sedan (four passengers, four bags). Groups of seven or eight, common at the end of the surf season, need the 8-seat van. The air conditioning keeps the car cool on the hot plains around Moneragala, and you may want a light jumper once you reach the hills. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

Arugam Bay has no railway. The bus journey means a tuk-tuk or local bus to Pottuvil, a bus to Moneragala or Badulla, and another to Kandy: possible, but a full day with changes and little room for luggage. Some travellers go by Ella instead, taking a car from Arugam Bay to Ella, spending a night or two there, and then riding the hill-country train from Ella to Kandy; it is a beautiful option if you have the time. Ride-hailing apps do not operate on this route. For a direct trip in one day, door to door, the private taxi is the only practical choice.

Best time to travel this route

The surf season at Arugam Bay runs from about April to October, so most people make this trip in the dry months, when the roads are clear and the weather on the east coast is hot and sunny. From about October or November to January, the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain to the east and the area around Mahiyangana, and low sections of road can flood briefly. Leave Arugam Bay at about 07:30 after breakfast and you are through Lahugala in full daylight, up the 18 bends before the midday heat, and in Kandy around midday or early afternoon, ahead of the evening traffic. In July or August, the end of the surf season coincides with the Esala Perahera in Kandy, when hotels fill and the centre closes in the evenings, so book early. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
