A taxi from Arugam Bay to Mirissa covers about 245 km in about 5 hours 20 minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, from the east coast round to the south. It is the trip surfers and beach travellers make when they follow the seasons: Arugam Bay is at its best in the middle of the year, Mirissa and the south coast from about November to April, so many people make this move in October or early November, or the other way round in April and May. It is also a long crossing through quiet country, past the elephant ranges of Lahugala and the edge of Yala, where a known driver and a fixed plan help.

Journey details
From Arugam Bay the driver heads up to Pottuvil and turns west on the A4, past the Lahugala reservoirs to Siyambalanduwa. From there the route swings south through Buttala and down towards Kataragama and Tissamaharama, skirting the northern side of Yala, then west along the south coast past Hambantota. The last part is either on the Southern Expressway to an exit near Matara, or along the A2 coast road through Tangalle and Dickwella; your driver chooses on the day. Without stops, allow about 5 hours 20 minutes. Kataragama, the pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims, is a short detour; a lunch stop at Tissamaharama, by the lake, splits the day neatly in two.
The road
The A4 between Pottuvil and Siyambalanduwa passes Lahugala, where elephants gather at the reservoirs close to the road, particularly in the dry months and from late afternoon. Drivers slow down and give them space. The road is quiet but narrow in places, with long stretches between villages. South of Buttala the country is dry and flat, with little traffic and the occasional peacock or buffalo on the road. Around Kataragama and Tissamaharama, elephants from Yala also cross after dark. Once you reach the coast, the expressway is fast, while the A2 through Tangalle and Dickwella is slower and busy. Mirissa’s guesthouses are reached from the A2 by short lanes, some unpaved.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For surfers, the vehicle depends on the boards. Tell us when you book how many boards you have and how long they are, and we will send a vehicle they fit inside; often that means a van even for two people. Without boards, the economy sedan suits three passengers with three bags, and the comfort sedan a couple wanting more legroom and space for four bags on a five-hour drive. Families should take the Comfort van (6 seats) and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Bring water and snacks for the quiet stretch around Lahugala, where shops are few. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no railway anywhere near Arugam Bay. Public buses mean several changes, usually at Pottuvil, Monaragala or Wellawaya, and Matara, and a full day of travel with luggage; with surfboards, buses become very difficult. A tuk-tuk is not realistic for this distance. Some travellers split the trip with a night in Tissamaharama and a Yala safari, which turns the crossing into two short days; in that case, book Arugam Bay to Tissamaharama and Tissamaharama on to Mirissa separately. For most people moving coasts with luggage, the direct taxi is the simplest option by far.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Arugam Bay early, by about 07:00, so that you pass Lahugala and the Yala fringe in daylight and reach Mirissa by early afternoon. Elephants are most active near the roads at dawn and dusk, and driving the A4 after dark is slow. The east coast surf season runs roughly from April or May to September, the south coast season from about November to April, so the switch is busiest in October and November, and again around April and May. From November to January the north-east monsoon brings rain to the east. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%; booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How long is the drive from Arugam Bay to Mirissa?
About 245 km and about 5 hours 20 minutes without stops. With lunch in Tissamaharama, count on six hours or more.
Can you take our surfboards?
Yes, if you tell us when booking how many and how long they are. We send a vehicle the boards fit inside, which is often a van.
Will we see elephants?
Quite likely, around Lahugala on the A4 and sometimes near Yala. The driver slows down and keeps a safe distance.
Can we stop at Kataragama on the way?
Yes. It is a short detour, and it is added to the quote as a fixed stop. Ask at booking or on WhatsApp.
Is it safe to drive at night?
We advise against it on this route because of elephants on the A4 and near Yala. Trips between 22:00 and 05:00 also carry a 15% surcharge.
How do we pay?
You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to pay on the day. If you prefer, choose on the last screen to pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver; the trip then costs 10% more. We confirm on WhatsApp, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
