Arugam Bay is on the wrong side of the island for most itineraries and that is precisely its appeal. The east coast has its dry season when the south and west are under monsoon, so from May to September, while Mirissa is grey and windblown, Arugam Bay has the best right-hand point break in Sri Lanka and a village full of people who came for it. Outside those months it empties almost completely — a genuinely seasonal place, which is unusual on an island where most resorts limp through the off-season.

Where we pick up in Arugam Bay

We collect from anywhere in Arugam Bay, Pottuvil and along the beach road towards Panama. The village is a single road with everything on it, so pickups are straightforward. For onward transfers, tell us whether you are heading back over the hills to Ella or south to Yala: the routes diverge early and the timing differs by more than an hour.

Getting to and from Arugam Bay

This is the longest standard transfer we run: roughly seven to eight hours from Colombo airport, and about four from Ella down through Monaragala. The distances are real and the roads for the last stretch are single carriageway through Lahugala, where wild elephants cross regularly and driving after dark is genuinely inadvisable. Anyone planning to arrive in Arugam Bay should start early rather than late, and we schedule accordingly rather than accepting a departure that puts the last hour in the dark.

Travel tips for Arugam Bay

The season is May to September, exactly inverted from the south coast, and this single fact governs everything. In February the village is largely shut. The bay itself is not a swimming beach — it is a surf point with rocks and current — and families are better served at the sandy stretch towards Pottuvil. Bring cash: ATMs exist but are unreliable, and card acceptance in the smaller places is patchy. Elephants on the Lahugala road at dusk are not a rumour.

About Arugam Bay

Main Point is the wave, and Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock are the alternatives when it is crowded, which in July and August it will be. Kumana National Park, an hour south, is a bird sanctuary with far fewer jeeps than Yala and a real chance of elephants and crocodiles. Lahugala, on the road in, is a small park where elephants gather at the tank in the late afternoon and can often be watched from the road for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the transfer from Colombo airport to Arugam Bay?

Roughly seven to eight hours, the longest standard transfer we run. We schedule an early start so the last stretch through Lahugala is not driven after dark.

When is Arugam Bay in season?

May to September, the exact inverse of the south coast. Outside those months much of the village closes.

How far is Ella?

About four hours over the hills via Monaragala. It is the most common onward or inbound leg after the airport run.

Is it safe to drive there at night?

We avoid it. Wild elephants cross the road through Lahugala regularly, and the last stretch is single carriageway with no lighting.
