A taxi from Kandy to Arugam Bay covers 200 km in about 4 hours 20 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. Arugam Bay, near Pottuvil on the east coast, is Sri Lanka's best-known surf town, busy from April to October when the waves at the main point and the breaks around it are working. There is no train and no direct bus from Kandy, and the cross-country route is not obvious from a map, so a car with a driver who knows the roads makes a long day much simpler. The drive takes you from the hills through some of the least visited countryside on the island: forest reserves, reservoirs, sugar-cane fields and small towns, with elephants a real possibility on the final stretch.

Journey details
The driver picks you up at your hotel in Kandy and heads east on the A26 through Digana and Teldeniya, past the Victoria reservoir. After Hunnasgiriya the road drops off the edge of the hill country through the famous 18 hairpin bends towards Hasalaka, with wide views over the plains below, and continues to Mahiyangana, on the Mahaweli river, home to one of the oldest Buddhist shrines on the island. From Mahiyangana the route goes south through Bibile and Moneragala, rural towns in a region of forest and farmland, where it joins the A4 and runs east through Siyambalanduwa, past Lahugala National Park, to Pottuvil and finally Arugam Bay. Without stops, allow about 4 hours 20 minutes. Lunch in Mahiyangana or Moneragala is the natural break. Accommodation in Arugam Bay is spread along the main road and the beach, from the point to the south end and towards Pottuvil, so give the exact name when you book.
The road
The 18 bends after Hunnasgiriya are tight, and buses and lorries take them slowly in both directions; drivers keep plenty of space and avoid overtaking. If you are prone to car sickness, eat lightly before leaving and sit in front. Below the bends the roads become flat and quieter, but they are narrow two-lane roads through villages, with cattle, cyclists and tractors. Between Siyambalanduwa and Pottuvil, the A4 passes Lahugala, where elephants regularly come out to the reservoirs beside the road, particularly in the late afternoon; they have right of way, and drivers stop at a safe distance and never get out. Driving this last section after dark is best avoided for that reason. In Arugam Bay itself the main road is a single street, crowded with scooters, tuk-tuks and pedestrians in the evening during the season.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For one or two people, the economy sedan handles the route well and is the lowest price on this page (three passengers, three bags). Surfers travelling with boards should book the Comfort van (6 seats): boards lie flat inside with the seats folded, rather than wedged across a sedan for four hours. Couples with large cases will be more comfortable in the comfort sedan, which takes four passengers and four bags. Groups of seven or eight, common in the surf season, need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. The air conditioning is welcome once you come down from the hills into the warmer plains around Mahiyangana.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no railway to Arugam Bay. By bus, you would usually go from Kandy to Badulla or Moneragala, then on to Pottuvil, and take a tuk-tuk for the last few kilometres; it is possible but takes most of the day, with changes, crowded buses and little room for boards. Some travellers go via Ella instead, taking the train from Kandy to Ella and then a car from Ella to Arugam Bay, which is a beautiful option if you have two days. Ride-hailing apps do not cover this route. A private taxi is the only direct, door-to-door option.
Best time to travel this route
Arugam Bay's surf season runs from about April to October, when the southwest monsoon blows offshore on the east coast and the sea is clean and the weather dry. July and August are the busiest months. From about October or November to January, the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain to the east coast and parts of the route; roads can flood briefly, many guesthouses close, and the surf is irregular. Leave Kandy in the morning, around 08:00, so you are past the 18 bends and across Lahugala well before dusk, when elephants are most active. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days in advance takes 5% off.

How much is a taxi from Kandy to Arugam Bay?
A private taxi from Kandy to Arugam Bay costs $110 (LKR 35,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $130 (LKR 40,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $145 (LKR 46,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $175 (LKR 56,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). Prices checked on 5 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How long does the drive take?
It is 200 km and about 4 hours 20 minutes without stops. With a lunch break, plan on five hours door to door.
Which route does the driver take?
East on the A26 through the 18 bends to Mahiyangana, south through Bibile and Moneragala, then east on the A4 past Lahugala to Pottuvil and Arugam Bay.
Can I bring my surfboard?
Yes. Tell us how many boards when you book. We recommend the Comfort van (6 seats), where boards travel flat inside the vehicle.
Will we see elephants on the way?
Quite possibly, near Lahugala on the last stretch before Pottuvil, especially in the late afternoon. The driver stops at a safe distance; please stay in the car.
Is it better to go via Ella?
If you have time, taking the train from Kandy to Ella and then a car from Ella to Arugam Bay is a lovely two-day option. If you want to arrive in one day, the direct route via Mahiyangana is shorter.
How do I pay?
You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to pay the driver. You can also choose to pay 50% online and the rest in cash, which costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no extra charge.
