The A2 runs fifteen minutes north from the hotel strip to the Welipenna interchange, then the E01 Southern Expressway and the E03 carry you to the terminal. One hundred kilometres, an hour and forty-five minutes, and it holds at any hour because only the first few kilometres are ordinary road. Tolls are inside the quoted price. For a 01:30 departure the pickup falls around 20:15; for a 14:00 flight, around 08:45.

The variable at this end is Aluthgama, not the expressway. The hotel strip sits on the spit between the sea and the river, and everything leaving it crosses the bridge into town before turning north; on weekday mornings the market spills onto the A2 and that crossing costs fifteen minutes. Drivers who work this coast leave earlier rather than argue with it. The other consideration is peculiar to resorts: the big hotels here have long driveways and a single porte-cochère that fills with departing coaches between ten and eleven, so a car booked for check-out time may spend ten minutes queuing to reach the door. We build that in rather than discover it.

The road asks nothing of the vehicle, so this is entirely a luggage question, and Bentota is where it bites hardest. A family of four who arrived with four cases is leaving with four cases plus whatever a fortnight in a resort produced, and the comfort van is almost always the right answer for the return even when the comfort sedan, with its four cases, worked on the way in. Child seats, if you needed them on arrival, need requesting again on WhatsApp: they are not held in reserve for you. The coastal train from Aluthgama to Colombo Fort is cheap and pleasant, and if you have a late-evening flight and travel light it is a nice way to spend a final afternoon. It leaves you at Fort with thirty-five kilometres and a second booking still to solve, which is one point of failure too many when there is a boarding time involved. Expressway buses run from Welipenna and have the same last-mile problem plus very little luggage space. For a flight, the direct car is the version with a single moving part.

Almost any hour works. The expressway does not queue, and the only reliable slowdown is Aluthgama market on weekday mornings. Night departures are quicker still and carry a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. What is worth planning is the gap between check-out and your flight: resorts here check out at 11:00 and most long-haul departures are after midnight, which leaves a long afternoon. The car can collect you at check-out, stop at Kosgoda or Balapitiya on the way north, and still reach the terminal with the full buffer; it is priced as a transfer with waiting time rather than as a day hire.
