Taxi from Colombo Airport to Bentota, fixed price private transfer

The E03 links the airport to the E01 Southern Expressway north of Colombo, and the expressway does the work as far as the Welipenna interchange. From there it is fifteen minutes west on the A2 to the river and the hotel strip. An hour and forty-five minutes is the honest door-to-door figure and it holds up at almost any hour, because the only variable stretch is the last few kilometres through Aluthgama. Tolls are included in the price shown, along with fuel, parking and the driver.

The thing worth knowing about Bentota is that the name covers two different places separated by water. The resort strip proper sits on the spit between the sea and the Bentota river, reached by crossing the bridge at Aluthgama; the guesthouses and the railway station are on the north bank. Drivers who do not know the area routinely stop on the wrong side, which leaves you walking across a bridge with your luggage. Give us the property name and we will approach from the right side. The other local hazard is Aluthgama market, which spills onto the A2 on weekday mornings and can add fifteen minutes to an otherwise predictable run. Kosgoda, ten kilometres south, is where the turtle hatcheries are; the A2 through there is narrow and busy with tuk-tuks in the late afternoon.

This is a smooth, short, flat transfer, so the vehicle question is purely about luggage and passengers rather than comfort. Two people with two cases are entirely well served by the economy sedan and would gain nothing from spending more. Where we do change our advice is for families, which is most of who books this route: Bentota is resort country and a large share of our passengers here are two adults, two children and the luggage that goes with them. That combination does not fit an economy sedan boot, and the comfort sedan, which takes four people and four cases, is the right call, or the comfort van if the luggage runs beyond that, with child seats requested on WhatsApp once you have booked rather than hoped for on the day. We carry them, but not in every car by default.

The coastal railway runs to Aluthgama, a ten-minute tuk-tuk from most Bentota hotels, and the journey from Colombo Fort is cheap and pretty. It does not start at the airport, which is the flaw: you would need a transfer to Fort, then a train, then a tuk-tuk, with luggage, three times. Expressway buses to Galle stop at Welipenna and leave you in the same position. For a first-day arrival the direct car is the only version of this journey with a single point of failure, and later in your trip the train north to Colombo or south to Galle is a genuinely better way to travel.

The expressway does not care what time you leave, so plan around the beach rather than the traffic. The south-west coast runs its dry season from December to April, which is also when the sea is calm enough for the water sports the resorts are built around. From May to September the south-west monsoon puts a real swell on this stretch and the hotels pull in their catamarans; the river trips on the Madu Ganga still run, and prices drop sharply. Night arrivals are common here and the run is quicker in the dark, at the cost of a surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. Whatever the season, arriving before dark makes finding a beach-side property considerably easier.
