Taxi from Colombo Airport to Galle, fixed price private transfer

The route runs E03 south from the airport, joins the E01 Southern Expressway at Kottawa and stays on it for 110 km to the Pinnaduwa interchange just outside Galle. Two and a half hours door to door, and it barely varies: the expressway is tolled, well surfaced and rarely congested outside the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays in April. Tolls are included in the price quoted here, as is the fuel, there is no separate expressway charge added at the end, which is a common complaint about cheaper local operators.

Two things are worth knowing. First, the E01 has very few service areas, and the ones that exist are basic; if you want a proper meal, it is better to stop before joining at Kottawa or after leaving at Pinnaduwa than to rely on finding something en route. Second, the old A2 coast road still exists and is far prettier, it runs through Kalutara, Bentota and Hikkaduwa with the sea on your right most of the way. It takes about ninety minutes longer. If you have arrived on an overnight flight, take the expressway. If you have a free afternoon and want to see the coast, ask for the A2 on WhatsApp once you have booked; we will quote it as the same transfer with a longer duration rather than pretending it is a tour.

Because this route is almost entirely smooth dual carriageway, the case for spending more on the vehicle is weaker here than anywhere else on our network. An economy sedan with two people and two cases is perfectly comfortable for two and a half hours at a steady speed. The one exception is luggage: surfboards are common on this route, and they do not go in a sedan. If you are travelling with boards, book the comfort van and tell us the board length, anything over seven feet needs the van with the seats reconfigured, which we arrange in advance rather than discovering at the airport.

The coastal train from Colombo to Galle is cheap, scenic and slow, and it does not serve the airport. Expressway buses do run from Colombo to Galle and are genuinely good value, but again start in the city, not at CMB, and luggage space is limited to what fits on your lap. For a first arrival with bags, the private transfer wins on time and hassle. For a later trip up the coast to Colombo, with a small bag, the train is the better experience and we would say so.

This transfer is reliable at any hour, which is unusual in Sri Lanka. The expressway is open twenty-four hours and is quiet at night. The only period we would flag is mid-April, when the New Year holiday empties Colombo onto the south coast and the E01 genuinely does jam. Between May and September the south-west monsoon brings heavy afternoon rain to Galle itself; it rarely affects the driving time on the expressway, but it does affect whether you want to be dropped at a beach hotel or somewhere with a covered entrance.
