A taxi from Negombo to Bentota takes about 1 hour 50 minutes for 105 km, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle, with tolls, fuel and the driver included. It is the shortest of the beach transfers out of Negombo and the gentlest way to start a holiday: one night near the airport after the flight, a late breakfast, and you are at your resort on the Bentota river by early afternoon, in time for check-in. Bentota is the quieter, more resort-like end of the west coast, known for its long sandy beach, river trips through the mangroves and water sports on the lagoon, and it suits travellers who want a few days of rest before touring.

Journey details
From Negombo the driver joins the E03 at Katunayake and drives south along the expressway towards Colombo, then turns onto the E02 Outer Circular Expressway at Kerawalapitiya. The Outer Circular runs around the eastern side of the city through Kadawatha and Kaduwela and meets the E01 Southern Expressway at Kottawa. You leave the E01 after a short stretch at the Welipenna interchange and drive about fifteen kilometres west on country roads through rubber and cinnamon to Aluthgama, on the north bank of the Bentota river. Most resort hotels lie across the bridge, on the spit between the river and the sea, while guesthouses, villas and the railway station are on the Aluthgama side or along the coast road to the south. Without stops, the journey takes about 1 hour 50 minutes. The short distance leaves room for a visit on the way, such as the Brief garden near Bentota or Lunuganga, the country estate and garden of the architect Geoffrey Bawa on Dedduwa lake, if you arrange it when you book.
The road
Because the trip is short, the town ends matter more than the expressway. Leaving Negombo between 07:30 and 09:00 on a weekday means slow going on the main road and the lagoon bridge, so a later start is often quicker overall. The Kadawatha and Kottawa ends of the Outer Circular can queue in the Colombo rush. The road from Welipenna to Aluthgama is a narrow two-lane road through small villages, with buses stopping in the road. In Aluthgama, the market spills onto the A2 on weekday mornings and the bridge over the river is a slow point. The local trap is that Bentota covers both banks of the river: a driver who does not know the area can stop on the wrong side and leave you crossing the bridge with your luggage. Give us the exact name of your hotel and the driver will approach from the right side.
Recommended vehicle for this route
On a run of under two hours, comfort is mainly about space. The economy sedan (three passengers, three bags) is the lowest price on this page and suits a couple or a solo traveller with normal luggage. The comfort sedan takes four passengers and four bags, and is the better choice for two people with large cases and golf bags or diving gear. Families on a beach holiday with children, buggies and bags for two weeks should book the Comfort van (6 seats); groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request, so you do not have to bring your own. Every vehicle can reach the resort entrances on the spit, which have proper driveways.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
The coastal railway stops at Aluthgama and Bentota, but from Negombo you must first ride into Colombo Fort and change trains, which makes a 105 km trip last half a day and means carrying cases on and off busy platforms. Buses also go via Colombo with a change. Ride-hailing apps can sometimes find a car in Negombo for a trip of this length, but the fare moves with demand and some drivers decline. A private taxi is the only way to go from hotel to hotel without handling luggage. If you land in the morning and want to go straight to the beach, the direct transfer from the airport to Bentota has its own page, with a name-board welcome and 60 minutes of free waiting.
Best time to travel this route
Bentota's beach season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the sky clear and river trips run every day. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough seas, red flags on the beach and heavy showers, though resorts stay open and prices are lower. Resort check-in is usually in the early afternoon, so a pickup in Negombo around 11:00, after check-out, gets you to Bentota at about the right time and avoids the morning traffic in both towns. Friday afternoons and holiday weekends are busy on the road south. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and the 15 December to 15 January peak adds 10%. Booking more than 14 days before travel takes 5% off the fixed price.

About 1 hour 50 minutes for 105 km without stops. On a weekday morning rush, allow a little more for the first few kilometres out of Negombo.
Which way does the driver go?
E03 from Katunayake, the E02 Outer Circular around Colombo from Kerawalapitiya to Kottawa, then the E01 Southern Expressway to the Welipenna interchange and west to Aluthgama and Bentota.

Yes. Give us the hotel's name when you book. The driver crosses the bridge at Aluthgama and takes you to the entrance, rather than stopping on the town side.
