The E03 clears Colombo, the A6 runs north-east through Kurunegala to Dambulla, and the last twenty-five kilometres head east on the A11 to the junction. One hundred and seventy-five kilometres, about three and three quarter hours. The road is good and largely flat throughout, and the only reliably slow section is the one-way system through the middle of Kurunegala in the middle of the day. This is dry-zone country and hot: expect a noticeable temperature difference from the coast by the time you arrive.

The stretch between Dambulla and Habarana crosses genuine elephant country, and it is one of the few roads in Sri Lanka where the crossing signs are not decorative. Wild elephants move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and the surrounding scrub, and at dusk they are on and beside the carriageway often enough that drivers who work this route slow down as a matter of course after about five in the afternoon. It is not a reason to avoid arriving late, but it is a reason not to be in a hurry. The other thing to know is what happens at the junction itself: Habarana is the assembly point for safari jeeps and you will be approached, sometimes energetically, by people selling them. Your hotel arranges these more cheaply and more reliably, and our drivers do not take commissions for introducing you to anyone.

The road asks nothing special of a vehicle, so choose on heat, space and what happens next. Air conditioning matters more here than on the coast, simply because the dry zone is hotter and the drive is nearly four hours. For two people the economy sedan is adequate; for four with luggage the comfort sedan, and for five or six the comfort van. The practical question, as at Dambulla, is whether you keep the car: Habarana exists as a base, and most people who stay here want a vehicle for two or three days to reach Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and the parks. Extending this booking is cheaper than a separate day hire. Note that the vehicle does not enter the national parks: those require a registered safari jeep, arranged separately, and no transfer car of any size is permitted inside.

Habarana has a railway station on the northern line and it is one of the few cultural triangle destinations you can reach by train at all, but the service is slow, infrequent and starts from Colombo rather than the airport. Buses run to Dambulla and require a change plus a tuk-tuk. For an arrival with luggage neither is realistic. Once you are here, though, nothing is far: everything in the triangle is within an hour, which is the whole reason to choose this base over a prettier one.

Aim to arrive in daylight, both for the elephants on the Dambulla road and because hotel access tracks out here are unlit and often unpaved. The dry season from May to September is the best time to be in the triangle, and it coincides with the Gathering at Minneriya, when several hundred elephants congregate on the receding tank bed between roughly July and September. It is the largest concentration of wild Asian elephants anywhere and it is the single strongest reason to time a trip to this part of the island. The north-east monsoon brings real rain from November into January, when the tank fills, the herds disperse into the forest and the parks are much quieter.
