Prices checked on 5 October 2026.

A taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Madiha covers 175 km in about 3 hours, almost all of it on the expressways, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. Madiha is a small stretch of coast on the A2 between Mirissa and Matara, a few minutes west of Matara town and just past Polhena. It is known for its reef break, a left-hand wave that draws surfers from November to April, and for a handful of surf camps, guesthouses and cafes strung along the beach road rather than a resort strip. Coming straight from a long-haul flight, the attraction of a private transfer is simple: someone is waiting for you, your boards and bags go in the back, and you are delivered to the gate of your guesthouse, even when it sits up a sandy lane off the main road.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start

The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Madiha. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Madiha, the price stays the same.

You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.

Journey details

Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall holding a board with your name. We track the flight, so a delay does not cost you anything, and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included, which leaves time for immigration, baggage and a local SIM card. From the airport the car takes the Katunayake expressway (E03) towards Colombo, then the Outer Circular Highway around the city to Kottawa, where the Southern Expressway (E01) begins. The E01 runs inland through rubber and coconut country, well away from the coast, past the Galle interchanges and on to Matara, where the driver leaves it at Godagama. From there it is a short run down through the outskirts of Matara to the coast and west along the A2 to Madiha. Expressway tolls are included in the price. Without stops, allow about 3 hours; a breakfast or coffee stop at one of the expressway service areas adds twenty minutes or so. If you have booked a surf camp, give us its exact name: several share the same stretch of beach road and some are reached by narrow lanes behind the houses.

The road

The airport end is the only part where traffic is unpredictable. Leaving Katunayake is usually smooth, but the approach to the Outer Circular can slow down at the morning and evening peaks, especially on weekdays. Once on the Southern Expressway the road is fast and quiet, with a speed limit the drivers respect and very few lorries. The real change comes after Godagama: the last few kilometres run through Matara, a busy town with buses, tuk-tuks and a one-way system around the fort and the bridge over the Nilwala river. On the A2 itself the road is narrow, lined with houses and shops, and buses stop wherever a passenger waves, so the last stretch takes longer than its distance suggests. Most guesthouses in Madiha sit on the sea side of the A2 or up short lanes on the inland side; drivers know the beach road but appreciate a pin on WhatsApp if your place is new.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For one or two travellers with normal luggage, the economy sedan is enough for a three-hour expressway run and is the lowest price on this page (up to three passengers and three bags). Surfers are the exception. A board bag does not travel well across a sedan, so if you are bringing boards, book the Comfort van (6 seats) and say so in the booking notes: with seats folded there is room for boards lying flat inside the car, protected from the sun. Couples with large cases will be more comfortable in the comfort sedan, which takes four passengers and four bags. Groups of seven or eight, such as a surf trip between friends, need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free if you ask when you book, and every vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters after a night flight in the coastal heat.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

The train from Colombo Fort to Matara follows the coast and is a beautiful ride, but it means getting from the airport to Fort first, then a crowded carriage with bags and boards, and a tuk-tuk from Matara station to Madiha at the end. Express buses on the Southern Expressway run from Colombo to Matara and are quick and cheap, but they leave from Maharagama or central Colombo, not the airport, and luggage space is limited. Ride-hailing apps work around the airport, but few drivers accept a 175 km trip and some will want to stop for fuel or renegotiate. A private taxi is the only option that goes from the arrivals hall to your guesthouse door without a change, at a price fixed before you fly.

Best time to travel this route

The south coast season runs from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the sun is out and Madiha's reef break works best. From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rain, wind and rough seas to this coast; the road is still open, but the beach is quieter and some surf camps close or change their offer. Most long-haul flights land in the early morning or around midnight. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge, so a flight landing at 03:00 and a drive arriving at dawn is charged at the night rate. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off. If you land at the morning peak, allow a little extra time getting round Colombo.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Madiha?

A private taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Madiha costs $95 (LKR 30,500) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $110 (LKR 35,000) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $130 (LKR 40,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $155 (LKR 48,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). Prices checked on 5 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long does the drive take?

It is 175 km and about 3 hours without stops. Most of it is on the E03, the Outer Circular and the Southern Expressway; the slow part is the last stretch through Matara and along the A2.

Where will the driver meet me?

In the arrivals hall, after customs, holding a board with your name. We follow your flight, and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included, so there is no need to rush through immigration.

Can I bring a surfboard?

Yes. Tell us how many boards when you book. For boards we recommend the Comfort van (6 seats), where they lie flat inside the car with the seats folded rather than on the roof.

Is Madiha the same as Mirissa or Polhena?

No. Madiha is its own small beach between Mirissa and Matara, just west of Polhena and a few minutes from Matara town. If your accommodation is in Mirissa or Polhena itself, use the page for that town so the price matches the address.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. A coffee stop at an expressway service area is easy, and you can also ask for a stop in Galle or at a beach on the way. Mention it when you book or on WhatsApp so the driver plans for it.

How do I pay, and can I cancel?

You pay the full price online by card when you book, and there is nothing to pay the driver. Alternatively you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
