Prices checked on 4 October 2026.

A taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Udawalawe covers 180 km in about 3 hours 5 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. Udawalawe National Park is the most reliable place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants: open grassland and scrub around a large reservoir, with herds visible in the park on almost every safari, and the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are raised before release, just outside the gate. Many travellers go there straight from the airport, either to start their trip with a safari or because Udawalawe sits neatly between the south coast and the hills. A direct transfer avoids a night in Colombo and gets you to a hotel near the park in time to rest, or to join an afternoon game drive.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start

The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Udawalawe. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Udawalawe, the price stays the same.

You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.

Journey details

The driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board. Your flight is tracked and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included. From Katunayake the usual route is entirely on fast roads at first: the E03 towards Colombo, the Outer Circular Highway round the city, and the Southern Expressway (E01) south through the interior. Beyond Matara the driver leaves the expressway and heads inland through Embilipitiya, a market town in rice and sugar-cane country, then north to Udawalawe village and the park entrance on the Thanamalwila road, below the reservoir dam. There is a second route inland via Ratnapura and Pelmadulla, shorter on the map but slower, with long hill sections and heavy traffic on the A4; drivers sometimes use it depending on the time of day and where your hotel is. Either way, plan on about 3 hours 5 minutes without stops, with tolls included. Hotels and safari lodges are spread out around the park, some on dirt tracks, so give the exact name when you book.

The road

The expressway section is easy driving, and the service areas are clean and safe for a break. The first slow point is the exit and the run through Embilipitiya, where tractors, trucks loaded with cane and three-wheelers share a two-lane road and the town centre is busy in the morning. North of Embilipitiya the road opens up, with paddy fields and then dry scrub as you approach the park. The park boundary is fenced along much of the main road, but elephants gather along the fence on the Thanamalwila side and sometimes stand by the roadside waiting for food from passing vehicles; feeding them is illegal and dangerous, and drivers will not stop for it. After dark, slow down near the park: animals and unlit bicycles both appear suddenly. The car does not enter the park itself, as safaris are done in open jeeps that you hire at the gate or through your hotel.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For two people, the economy sedan is fine on these roads and is the cheapest option on this page, taking up to three passengers and three bags. If you are carrying camera gear and big cases, or plan to continue to the coast or the hills a day or two later, the comfort sedan (four passengers, four bags) gives more room for the three hours. Families should look at the Comfort van (6 seats), which is also easier to get in and out of on the rough lanes leading to some lodges. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. Whatever you choose, remember that the safari itself is in a jeep: your bags can stay at the hotel, and the transfer car does not wait during the game drive.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no railway to Udawalawe, and public transport from the airport means at least two buses, usually via Colombo and Ratnapura or Embilipitiya, with a change in a busy bus stand and a tuk-tuk at the end; with luggage after a long flight, that is a full and tiring day. Express buses on the Southern Expressway only go as far as Matara or Hambantota, not to the park. Ride-hailing apps rarely find a driver willing to go this far. Some travellers combine Udawalawe with Ella or the south coast and book a driver for several days; you can also simply book separate transfers, such as this one, then Udawalawe to Ella or to Mirissa afterwards, each at a fixed price.

Best time to travel this route

Udawalawe is in Sri Lanka's dry zone, and the park is open almost all year. Elephants are easy to see in every season, but the dry months, roughly May to September, bring them close to the reservoir and make the grassland easier to scan. The main rains fall from about October to January, usually in afternoon storms; tracks in the park can get muddy, but safaris continue. The best game drives are early morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler and animals are active. With a morning landing, you can reach the park area by lunch and join an afternoon safari. Late-night flights are common: a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days in advance takes 5% off.

How long is the drive?

It is 180 km and about 3 hours 5 minutes without stops, mostly on the expressways and then inland through Embilipitiya.

Can we go straight to a safari from the airport?

No. Private cars are not allowed on safari tracks. You visit the park in an open safari jeep with a tracker, and your luggage stays at the hotel or in a locked room.

Can we visit the Elephant Transit Home on the way?

Yes, it is by the main road near the park entrance. Calves are fed at set times during the day; check the current times locally, and tell the driver when you book so he can plan the arrival.

Where will the driver meet me at the airport?

In the arrivals hall, after customs, holding a board with your name. We track your flight and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included.

How do I pay?

Pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay on the day. If you prefer, pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver; that option costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and we confirm everything on WhatsApp.
