A private taxi from Ella to Galle covers about 175 km in about four hours fifteen minutes, at a fixed price per vehicle agreed before you leave. It is the hills-to-coast leg that ends many Sri Lanka itineraries: a last morning in Ella, then the descent through the Ella Gap, the dry lowlands and the Southern Expressway, and an afternoon arrival inside the ramparts of Galle Fort or at a beach hotel nearby. There is no sensible public transport link between the two, so for most travellers with luggage the choice is between doing it in one drive or breaking it with a night by a national park.

Journey details
From Ella the A23 drops past Ravana Falls through the Ella Gap to Wellawaya, the last hill town. The usual line then runs south across the plains through Thanamalvila and Lunugamvehera to join the Southern Expressway, the E01, near Hambantota, and follows it west past Matara to the Galle exit, a short drive from the Fort and from Unawatuna. Expressway tolls are part of the fixed price. A second line leaves Wellawaya to the west through Udawalawe and Embilipitiya and reaches the expressway further along; it is the one to take if you want the Udawalawe elephants on the way. Allow about four hours fifteen minutes without stops. With an Udawalawe safari or a long lunch, the day stretches to seven or eight hours, which is fine if you leave early.
The road
Nearly all the bends of the day are in the first hour. The Ella Gap descent loses around 800 metres on a narrow road with rock on one side and a long drop on the other, and buses climbing towards Ella take the inside line on every hairpin. In the morning the upper bends can be wet and clouded. The lowland stretch through Thanamalvila is flat and fast but crosses elephant country: animals are sometimes beside the road near Lunugamvehera, and cattle wander onto the tarmac at any hour. The expressway is the easy part, with rest areas and fuel stations, and the speed limit is enforced. Galle is the slow finish: the roads from the exit to the town centre are busy around the bus station, and inside the Fort the lanes are narrow and partly one-way. The driver drops you at your hotel door when the lane allows it, otherwise at the nearest gate a short walk away.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Comfort van
More than four hours in the car is where the comfort sedan pays for itself over the economy sedan: more legroom, larger boot, and a quieter ride once you reach the expressway. The economy sedan still works for up to three passengers with three bags who want the lowest price. Families of four to six travel better in the 6-seat van, and groups of seven or eight in the 8-seat van. If you add an Udawalawe safari, the car keeps your luggage while you are in the park, so choose a vehicle where the bags fit in the boot rather than on the seats. Child seats are free on request, and anyone who gets carsick should sit in front for the first hour.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no direct train between Ella and Galle. By rail you would go back up the hill-country line towards Kandy or Colombo and then take the coastal line south, which takes most of two days. Buses go from Ella down to Wellawaya and on to the coast, with changes at Tissamaharama or Matara; it can be done in a long day with light bags, but not easily with suitcases. App taxis are rarely available in Ella. If you want Yala as well as the beach, the better plan is two legs: Ella to Tissamaharama, a safari, then Tissa to the coast the next day.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Ella around 08:00. You descend once the morning cloud has lifted from the Ella Gap, reach the expressway around midday, and arrive in Galle in the early afternoon with time to walk the ramparts at sunset. The south-west coast around Galle is driest from December to April; from May to September, the south-west monsoon brings showers and rough seas. The Uva hills around Ella are wettest from October to January, when the descent can be slow in rain. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% surcharge.
