A private taxi from Ella to Tissamaharama covers about 110 km in about two and a half hours, at a fixed price per vehicle set before departure. Tissamaharama, usually shortened to Tissa, is the base for safaris in Yala National Park, so this is the transfer most people take when they leave the hills for leopards and elephants. It is also a drive of two halves: a winding descent of around 800 metres through the Ella Gap, then flat, hot dry-zone country where the vegetation thins and the first peacocks appear by the road.

Journey details
From Ella the A23 drops past Ravana Falls, which pours down right beside the road, through the Ella Gap to Wellawaya. That first hour holds almost all the bends. From Wellawaya there are two ways south. One follows the A2 through Thanamalvila and Lunugamvehera, flat and fast. The other goes through Buttala and Kataragama, the pilgrimage town, and enters Tissa from the north. Your driver chooses on the day unless you want Kataragama. Just south of Wellawaya, a short detour leads to Buduruwagala, seven figures carved into a rock face in a quiet forest. About 110 km and about two and a half hours without stops; three and a half with Ravana Falls and Buduruwagala.
The road
The Ella Gap descent is steep, with tight bends, rock walls on one side and long drops on the other, and buses that climb and descend with little regard for lanes. Mornings can be wet and the cloud sometimes sits on the upper bends. Parking at Ravana Falls is a short roadside strip that fills with buses at midday. Below Wellawaya the roads are straight and quiet, but the dry zone has its own hazards: cattle and goats on the tarmac, cyclists without lights at dusk and, especially on the Thanamalvila and Lunugamvehera stretches near the park boundaries, wild elephants crossing in the evening. That is the main reason drivers prefer to arrive in Tissa before dark. In town, most safari hotels are around the Tissa Wewa lake or on the road to Kirinda and Yala.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Comfort sedan
The economy sedan works for up to three people and three bags on a drive of this length, and the comfort sedan adds room for four passengers or bigger cases. Families or groups planning a Yala safari often travel with more luggage than they expect, including camera bags and lenses; the 6-seat van keeps those out of the footwells. Groups of seven or eight take the 8-seat van. Pack something light and long-sleeved within reach: you leave Ella in cool air and arrive in Tissa in full lowland heat, and the car is air-conditioned the whole way.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no train to Tissa; the railway along the south ends at Beliatta. Buses run from Ella down to Wellawaya, and from there on to Tissa, sometimes with a change at Thanamalvila or Kataragama. It is slow, hot and difficult with big bags, and the timing rarely fits a check-in before an afternoon safari. App taxis are almost absent in Ella, and a tuk-tuk for 110 km is uncomfortable in the lowland heat. If you want to see Udawalawe and Yala in the same trip, the drive can go via Udawalawe instead, which is longer and better booked as two separate legs.
Best time to travel this route
Plan around the safari. Yala jeeps go in at dawn, around 05:30, and again in the afternoon, around 14:30. For an afternoon safari the same day, leave Ella by 09:00 so you can check in and eat first. For a dawn safari the next morning, any daytime departure works, but arriving before dusk avoids elephants on the road in the dark and the 15% night rate for arrivals between 22:00 and 05:00. Yala Block 1 usually closes for several weeks in the driest part of the year, typically from September to mid October; check before you plan. Between 15 December and 15 January, when Yala is busiest, a 10% high-season rate applies.

About 110 km and about two and a half hours. Add an hour for Ravana Falls and Buduruwagala.

We drop you at your hotel in Tissa or at your safari operator. Only registered safari jeeps enter the park, and those are booked separately, usually through your hotel.
Can we stop at Ravana Falls or Buduruwagala on the way?
