A taxi from Galle to Sigiriya covers 280 km in about 6 hours, from the Dutch ramparts on the south coast to the rock fortress in the dry zone, in a private air-conditioned car at a fixed price per vehicle. It is one of the longest single days on a Sri Lankan itinerary, and it usually comes in one of two places: at the start of a circuit run in reverse, by people who landed and went straight to the beach, or after a few days in Galle when the south-west monsoon is making the coast grey and the cultural triangle is dry. Either way it is a full day on the road, and the trick is to make it one clean run rather than a string of slow towns. This page covers pickups anywhere in Galle, including hotels inside the fort walls, and drop-offs anywhere around Sigiriya.

Journey details

The driver collects you at your door, inside the fort if that is where you are staying, and heads inland to the Galle interchange of the Southern Expressway. The first stretch is the easy one: north on the expressway, inland of Hikkaduwa, Bentota and Kalutara, to the edge of Colombo, then round the east of the capital on the Outer Circular Expressway. Where the ring road meets the Kandy road, the car turns north-east towards Kurunegala, using the section of the Central Expressway that now runs up to Kurunegala when it saves time. From Kurunegala it is the A6 the rest of the way, through Ibbagamuwa, Melsiripura and Galewela to Dambulla, and then the last short run past Inamaluwa and into Sigiriya. Allow about 6 hours for the 280 km without stops. With a proper lunch and a visit to the Dambulla cave temple, plan on eight, which is why an early start matters.

The road

Two thirds of the distance is on fenced expressway, limited to 100 km/h, with service areas for coffee and toilets, so the morning passes quickly. The time is lost after you come off it. The roads north of Colombo towards Kurunegala run through busy market towns, and Kurunegala itself, beneath its huge bare rock outcrops, has a one-way centre that clogs around midday. The A6 north of Kurunegala is a good two-lane road but carries lorries bound for Dambulla market and Trincomalee, and the driver will overtake patiently rather than hard. Dambulla is the last proper town: its main junction is busy all day and the cave temple entrance is right on the road at the southern end. After Inamaluwa the road narrows through scrub jungle with signed elephant crossings, and Sigiriya hotels are spread over gravel lanes that are hard to find in the dark. Send a location pin on WhatsApp if your lodge is off the main road.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Six hours is long enough that space matters more than on any shorter trip. The economy sedan carries three passengers with three bags and suits a pair travelling light; for a couple with two large cases plus day bags, the comfort sedan is the better choice, with room for four bags and more legroom for a full day. Families should take the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van, so nobody spends the afternoon with a bag at their feet. One Galle detail: if you are staying inside the fort, a sedan gets through the narrow lanes to your door more easily than a van. Child seats are free on request, and the driver will stop whenever a child needs a break.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no railway anywhere near Sigiriya, so the train is not a real option: you could ride the coast line from Galle to Colombo Fort, but you would still need a bus or car for the second half. Buses mean at least two changes, in Colombo and in Dambulla, and the best part of a long day with your bags in the aisle. Some travellers split the trip, going Galle to Kandy one day and Kandy to Sigiriya the next, which works well if you want to see Kandy anyway, though that route through the hills is longer in total. If Kandy is already behind you or later in your plan, the direct taxi is the quickest way to swap the coast for the cultural triangle in a single day.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Galle by about 07:00. You clear the expressway before the late-morning traffic around Colombo, reach Kurunegala around lunchtime and arrive in Sigiriya by mid-afternoon, in daylight, which matters on the last stretch where elephants cross at dusk. A late start means meeting the evening rush on the roads north of Colombo and arriving after dark. The weather works in your favour for much of the year: when the south-west monsoon brings rain to Galle from about May to September, the cultural triangle is in its dry season. From about October to January the north-east monsoon brings afternoon showers to Sigiriya instead. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Galle to Sigiriya?

A private taxi from Galle to Sigiriya costs $170 (LKR 53,500) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $195 (LKR 61,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $220 (LKR 70,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $265 (LKR 84,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 280 km journey, about 6 h of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long does the drive from Galle to Sigiriya take?

About 6 hours for 280 km without stops. With lunch and a visit to the Dambulla cave temple, allow about eight hours door to door.

Do we go through Colombo?

No. The driver stays on the Southern Expressway and the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city, then heads north towards Kurunegala.

Can we stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way?

Yes, it sits right on the route, shortly before Sigiriya. Your bags stay locked in the car while you climb. Shoulders and knees must be covered, so keep suitable clothes in a day bag. Tell us about any stop when you book.

Is it better to break the journey in Kandy?

Only if you want to visit Kandy. Going through the hills is longer than the direct road via Kurunegala, but two shorter days via Kandy suit some travellers better than one long one. We can book both legs.

Can the driver pick us up inside Galle Fort?

Yes. Cars can enter the fort and the driver comes to your hotel. A few lanes are too narrow for a van, in which case he waits at the nearest corner.

How do we pay?

You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to hand the driver in Sigiriya. If you prefer, the last screen lets you pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, but the trip then costs 10% more. We confirm on WhatsApp, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
