A taxi from Mirissa to Galle covers 35 km in about 45 minutes along the coast road, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, from your guesthouse in Mirissa to your hotel or to the gate of Galle Fort. Travellers book it for two quite different reasons. Some are moving on to a few nights inside the fort. Many more are staying in Mirissa and want an afternoon and sunset in Galle, then a ride back to the beach. If that is your plan, book it as a return: the return leg is 10% cheaper.

Journey details

From Mirissa the driver takes the A2 west, over the headland and around Weligama bay, past the surf breaks of Midigama and Ahangama, along Koggala with the lagoon inland and the stilt fishermen offshore, then through Habaraduwa and past Unawatuna into Galle. The fort sits on its promontory beyond the cricket stadium and the bus stand. If you are staying inside, the car drives in through the main gate to your hotel. For a day trip, the driver drops you at the gate or at the clock tower and agrees a time and a meeting point for the way back, usually the same spot. With the return booked, you have the late afternoon on the ramparts, the lighthouse and the sunset from Flag Rock, and the car is waiting when you are ready. The drive itself takes about 45 minutes each way.

The road

Leaving Mirissa, the first few minutes are the slowest: the beach lanes are narrow, and the stretch of A2 through the village is lined with parked tuk-tuks and scooters. Weligama town can hold you up around the market and the bus halt. After that the coast road is steady if never fast, with buses stopping in lane and fish stalls on the verge. Approaching Galle, the road is busiest between the Unawatuna junction and the stadium in the late afternoon. On the way back in the evening, the A2 is unlit in places and full of pedestrians, cyclists without lights and dogs asleep on the warm tarmac, which is why local drivers keep their speed down after dark. Galle Fort itself fills with visitors at weekends, and parking inside the walls is tight.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For a day trip without luggage, the economy sedan is all you need for up to three people, and it fits through the fort’s narrow lanes more easily than a van. Four people are more comfortable in the comfort sedan. If you are actually moving to Galle with full-size suitcases, the comfort sedan for two or three, or the 6-seat comfort van for a family, avoids squeezing cases onto laps. Groups of seven or eight take the 8-seat van and should expect a short walk inside the fort. Child seats are free on request, and asking for the same car on the way back keeps any shopping safely aboard.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

Buses on the Matara to Galle route stop on the A2 in Mirissa every few minutes and terminate at the Galle bus stand, a short walk from the fort gate; they are cheap and fast-driven, but standing room only at busy times. The coastal train from Weligama to Galle is a lovely short ride when the timing works, with tuk-tuks at both ends. A tuk-tuk all the way is the most popular budget option for a day trip, though returning in the dark on the open coast road is less pleasant. The private car wins on comfort and on the evening return, when buses thin out and the sunset crowd is all looking for a ride at once.

Best time to travel this route

For a day trip, leave Mirissa around 14:00 or 15:00, explore the fort in the cooler hours and watch the sunset from the ramparts, then head back after dinner. Midday in Galle Fort is hot and shadeless. The south coast is at its best from December to April; from May to September the monsoon brings showers that are usually short, and the fort is still worth seeing in the rain. Note that a return arriving back in Mirissa after 22:00 carries the 15% night surcharge, so a dinner finishing by about 21:00 keeps you in the normal rate. Weekends and Sri Lankan public holidays bring crowds to the fort.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Mirissa to Galle?

A private taxi from Mirissa to Galle costs $35 (LKR 11,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $39 (LKR 12,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $46 (LKR 14,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $55 (LKR 17,500) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 35 km journey, about 45 min of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

Can we do a day trip to Galle Fort and come back the same evening?

Yes. Book the return when you reserve: you choose the time for the way back, the driver meets you where he dropped you, and the return leg is 10% cheaper than booking it separately.

How long is the drive from Mirissa to Galle?

About 35 km and about 45 minutes on the A2 coast road, a little more at school times or through Weligama market.

Where does the driver drop us in Galle?

At your hotel inside or outside the fort, or at the fort gate for a day trip. Inside the walls the lanes are narrow, so the last few metres may be on foot.

Is the bus or train an option?

Yes, buses on the A2 are frequent and the coastal train runs from Weligama, but both are crowded and thin out in the evening. The car makes most sense for the return after sunset.

Is it safe to drive back after dark?

Yes, with a local driver who knows the unlit stretches and keeps the speed down. Only arrivals after 22:00 add the 15% night surcharge.

How do we pay?

You pay the full fixed price online by card when booking and nothing to the driver. The last screen also lets you pay 50% online and the rest in cash, but the trip then costs 10% more. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
