A taxi from Ella to Hikkaduwa covers 215 km in about 5 hours 10 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. It is the classic last leg of a tour of the island: from tea gardens and cool mornings in the hills down to the warm west coast, with its reef, its turtles and its long beach of guesthouses and surf shops. There is no direct train and no comfortable bus for this trip, so a private car is how most people do it. The route drops off the edge of the hill country in the first hour, crosses the dry southern plains, then picks up the Southern Expressway for the run west to Galle and Hikkaduwa. You leave after breakfast in Ella and arrive in time for a swim before sunset.

Journey details

From Ella the driver takes the A23 down the Ella Gap, past Ravana Falls, which sits right beside the road on the first bends below town and makes a quick photo stop. The road descends for about 25 km in tight curves to Wellawaya, at the foot of the hills, where the rock carvings of Buduruwagala are a short detour off the main road. From Wellawaya the A2 runs south across flat dry country through Kuda Oya and Thanamalwila, with views back to the escarpment, to Wirawila and the coast near Hambantota. There the driver joins the Southern Expressway (E01) heading west, past Matara and Galle, and leaves it at the Galle end, at Pinnaduwa or Baddegama, for the last stretch to Hikkaduwa on the coast road. Without stops, allow about 5 hours 10 minutes; tolls are included. Most people take one or two breaks: tea at a roadside stall near Wellawaya, a late lunch near Galle, or a walk round the ramparts of Galle Fort before the last 20 minutes to the beach.

The road

The descent from Ella to Wellawaya is the slowest and most demanding part: narrow, steep, with hairpins and buses coming up the middle of the road. Drivers take it gently, and anyone prone to car sickness should sit in front and eat lightly before leaving. After Wellawaya the road is straight and fast, but this is an agricultural area with tractors, wandering cattle and the occasional elephant crossing near the reserves after dark, so do not plan to drive this section at night. The Southern Expressway is the easy part, with speed limits respected and service areas for coffee and toilets. The final approach to Hikkaduwa on the Galle road is slower again: it is the main coast road, lined with shops and hotels, with buses that stop anywhere and heavy traffic in the late afternoon. Hotels in Hikkaduwa extend several kilometres north and south of the centre, so give the driver the exact name or a pin.

Recommended vehicle for this route

This is a long day in the car, so space matters more than on a short transfer. The economy sedan is fine for one or two light travellers and is the lowest price on this page, with room for three passengers and three bags. For couples with two big cases and backpacks, the comfort sedan (four passengers, four bags) is worth the difference over five hours. Families and groups who have travelled the island with full luggage are best in the Comfort van (6 seats), which has room to stretch out and keeps the bags in the boot rather than on knees. Parties of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. The air conditioning makes a real difference once you reach the hot plains below Wellawaya.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no railway between Ella and the south coast: the hill line runs north to Kandy and Colombo. Some travellers take the train from Ella to Colombo and another down the coast to Hikkaduwa, but that is a full day or more with a change in Colombo. By bus, you would need at least three: Ella to Wellawaya, Wellawaya to Matara or Tangalle, then a coastal bus to Hikkaduwa, each change with luggage in a busy bus stand. A tuk-tuk is not realistic for this distance. Ride-hailing apps barely work around Ella. A private taxi is the only door-to-door option, and it lets you add Ravana Falls, Buduruwagala or Galle Fort on the way.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Ella early, around 08:00, to take the Ella Gap before the tour buses and to arrive in Hikkaduwa by mid-afternoon. The hills can be misty in the early morning, which slows the descent, but it clears quickly. The west coast season around Hikkaduwa runs from about November to April, with calm seas and the best snorkelling on the reef. From May to September, the southwest monsoon makes the sea rough and brings rain, though Ella itself is often fine at that time. From about October to January the hills and the southeast get more rain from the northeast monsoon; the road stays open, but allow extra time. Trips with a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, and booking more than 14 days ahead saves 5%.

How long is the drive from Ella to Hikkaduwa?

It is 215 km and about 5 hours 10 minutes without stops. With a lunch break and a stop at Galle Fort, plan on six to seven hours door to door.

Which route does the driver take?

Down the Ella Gap on the A23 to Wellawaya, south on the A2 across the plains to the coast near Hambantota, then west on the Southern Expressway to Galle and up the coast road to Hikkaduwa.

Can we stop at Galle Fort on the way?

Yes, it is right on the route, about 20 minutes before Hikkaduwa. The driver can wait while you walk the ramparts, with your bags locked in the car. Ask when you book or on WhatsApp.

Is the road down from Ella difficult?

It is steep and winding for the first 25 km, down to Wellawaya. The drivers we work with take it every week. If you suffer from car sickness, sit in front and tell the driver, who will take it slowly.

Is there a train from Ella to Hikkaduwa?

Not directly. The hill line from Ella goes north to Kandy and Colombo; from Colombo another train runs down the coast. That makes a much longer day with a change and your luggage.

How do I pay, and what if my plans change?

You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to give the driver. You can also pay 50% online and the rest in cash, which costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.
