The route runs E03 and E01 down the south-west coast, then the A2 east past Hambantota and Tissamaharama, then inland on the A4 through Wellawaya, Monaragala and Siyambalanduwa before dropping to the coast at Pottuvil. Roughly eight hours of driving without stops, and realistically nine and a half with meal and leg stretches, which on a journey this long are not optional. The first three hours are expressway and easy. The rest is ordinary two-lane road through the dry zone, straight and fast in places, slow through the towns.

The last forty kilometres are the ones to know about. Between Lahugala and Pottuvil the A4 runs through an elephant park, and elephants stand in and beside the road at dusk with complete indifference to traffic. This is not the occasional sighting it is elsewhere on the island; it is a nightly occurrence, and it is the single strongest reason to plan an arrival in daylight. Drivers who work this route do not hurry that stretch after dark, and if the light has gone they will take it at a walking pace. Earlier on, the A4 through Monaragala is the only real town on the inland section, worth a stop because there is very little afterwards. Fuel, food and mobile coverage all thin out considerably east of Wellawaya.

Eight hours changes the calculation completely. For two people we recommend the comfort sedan over the economy car without hesitation, and for three or more the comfort van rather than anything smaller, because the ability to sit differently for a few hours is worth more than any other feature on a day this long. Boards, which most passengers on this route are carrying, need the van with a row folded flat regardless of headcount. Nothing longer than the van works here: the inland climbs are slow and Pottuvil is awkward. And whatever you choose, agree stops in advance rather than improvising them, because there are long stretches with nowhere sensible to pull in.

There is no train and no direct bus worth the name; public transport means a change at Monaragala or Pottuvil and the better part of two days. There is no domestic flight. The real alternative is to break the journey, and we would push you towards it: a night at Ella or Tissamaharama turns a brutal day into two comfortable half-days and costs very little more, because a two-leg transfer is priced as two transfers rather than as a day hire. A great many people who book this route straight through wish afterwards that they had not.

Arugam Bay runs on the opposite calendar to the rest of the country, and this catches people out. The season here is May to September, exactly when the south-west coast is under monsoon; the bay is dry, the swell is consistent and the town is full. From November to February the north-east monsoon arrives, much of the accommodation closes, and there is genuinely not much reason to make an eight-hour drive. For the transfer itself, leave the airport as early in the day as your flight allows: arriving in daylight matters for the Lahugala elephants, and covering the inland section in the afternoon heat is far more tolerable than covering the last forty kilometres in the dark.
