Taxi in Trincomalee: private transfers at fixed prices

In town and along the beach, take a tuk-tuk. Trincomalee to Uppuveli is a ten-minute ride for a few hundred rupees; agree the fare first, or book it on PickMe, which runs tuk-tuks here with the fare shown in the app. PickMe cars are scarce and Uber is barely present. The apps fail on the long ride: a request for Sigiriya or the airport often goes unanswered, and a driver who accepts may cancel once he sees the distance. A pre-booked transfer is the opposite product: one price agreed in advance, a driver who knows he is going to Colombo, and a car at your door at 04:00 if your flight demands it.

Trains run from Trincomalee station to Colombo Fort, including an overnight service: cheap, most of a night, and no stop at the airport. Buses leave all day for Colombo, Kandy and Anuradhapura, but Sigiriya means changing at Habarana or Dambulla, and the coastal buses towards Batticaloa are crowded. On arrival and departure days, the road transfer is the practical choice.

The railway station and bus stand are common pickups for travellers continuing by road; give us the train and the driver meets the real arrival. Fifteen minutes of waiting are included at every pickup, an hour at Colombo Airport, and all our drivers speak English.

The town sits on a peninsula between Back Bay and Dutch Bay, with Fort Frederick and Swami Rock at its tip. Uppuveli adjoins it to the north; Nilaveli is 15 km, about 25 min. The A6 runs south-west past the Kantale reservoir to Habarana, 95 km and 2 h 10, the junction for Sigiriya (105 km), Dambulla (120 km, 2 h 40) and Minneriya (90 km); Polonnaruwa is 100 km and 2 h 15. The A12 heads west past Mihintale (100 km) to Anuradhapura, 115 km and 2 h 35. South, the coast road crosses the Kinniya bridge to Pasikuda (105 km, 2 h 25) and Batticaloa (140 km). Jaffna lies 230 km to the north, about 5 h through Vavuniya. Colombo Airport is the long one: 250 km and 5 h via Habarana, Dambulla and Kurunegala.

The east coast runs on the opposite calendar to the south-west. From about May to September Trincomalee is dry and the sea calm, the season for beaches, Pigeon Island and boats; from October or November to January or February the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas, and most boat trips stop. That makes Trincomalee the natural second half of a summer itinerary, after Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. Between Habarana and Kantale wild elephants cross the A6, especially at dusk, one more reason to travel by daylight. For an early flight, count backwards: 5 h of road, three hours at the airport, and a 15% night surcharge on pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, shown before you pay. Koneswaram, the Hindu temple of Shiva on Swami Rock, stands above a sheer drop into the sea and has drawn pilgrims for well over a thousand years. The Portuguese pulled down the ancient temple in the 1620s for the stones of their fort; the present shrine was rebuilt in the twentieth century, and the evening puja is the moment to go. You reach it through Fort Frederick, still used by the army, where spotted deer graze between the old buildings. The Commonwealth War Cemetery on the Nilaveli road recalls the harbour’s years as a British naval base and the Japanese air raid of April 1942.

Uppuveli is a long beach of guesthouses and seafood grills; Nilaveli, further north, is wider and quieter. Pigeon Island National Park lies a short boat ride off Nilaveli: coral, turtles and often blacktip reef sharks in shallow water, best snorkelled early. When the sea is calm, broadly March to August, boats go out at dawn to look for blue whales and dolphins, with no guarantee of sightings. Boats and park entry are paid locally.
