City to city: choose your hotel from the start
The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Trincomalee. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Trincomalee, the price stays the same.
You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.
Journey details
Your driver follows the flight and meets you outside arrivals once you have cleared immigration and collected your bags. From Katunayake the route heads inland through Minuwangoda and joins the Central Expressway towards Kurunegala. From Kurunegala it follows the A6 north through coconut country to Dambulla, then on to Habarana, where the A6 turns north-east across the dry zone through Kantale and Thambalagamuwa to Trincomalee. The Dambulla cave temple and the town of Habarana are the natural places to break the journey, and Habarana is where most drivers suggest lunch. The route avoids Colombo entirely. Plan on about five hours of driving, a little more with a lunch stop, which on a morning arrival puts you in Trincomalee by mid-afternoon. Nilaveli, north of Trincomalee, is listed as a separate destination in the booking form.
The road
The first part is the easiest: from the airport through Minuwangoda to the Central Expressway, then a fast, tolled run to Kurunegala, with the toll included in your price. Kurunegala is the first bottleneck, a ring of one-way streets around the clock tower. The A6 to Dambulla is a good two-lane road, busy with lorries heading for the vegetable market. After Habarana the character changes: long, almost empty straights through forest and paddy, with intercity buses overtaking at speed and wild elephants in the forest corridor towards Kantale, particularly in the late afternoon and after dark. Drivers slow down and never stop to let passengers feed them. Kantale town is busy around the market, and the last kilometres pass the naval and air force land at China Bay, where photographs are not allowed.

Comfort van
After a long-haul flight, five hours in the car is a lot, so pick for comfort. A couple will find the comfort sedan worth it over the economy sedan for the legroom and seats that recline, though the economy sedan still works for up to three people with three bags. Families of four with full luggage should take the comfort sedan or the 6-seat comfort van; five or six people, the 6-seat comfort van; seven or eight, the 8-seat van. Diving and snorkelling gear for Pigeon Island travels better in a van. Ask for child seats when you book: they are free, and you will be glad of them on a five-hour drive.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
A train runs from Colombo to Trincomalee, but you would first need to get from the airport to Colombo Fort, and the journey on the line via Gal Oya takes most of a day, with few departures. Buses from Colombo or Negombo to Trincomalee are long and crowded, and not designed for travellers with suitcases. Ride-hailing apps work at the airport but are not suited to a five-hour trip across the island. If you land late at night, the sensible alternative is a night in Negombo, ten minutes from the airport, then the drive east in daylight the next morning.
Best time to travel this route
The east coast is at its best from May to September, with calm seas, clear water and dry weather, while the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain to Trincomalee from about October to January and the occasional flooded stretch near Kantale. For timing, a morning or midday landing is ideal: you are on the road soon after and arrive before dusk. For flights landing in the evening or at night, consider a night near the airport first, because the Habarana to Kantale stretch is an elephant corridor and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds a 15% surcharge. The 15 December to 15 January season adds 10%.

How much is a taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Trincomalee?
A private taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Trincomalee costs $150 (LKR 47,500) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $170 (LKR 54,500) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $195 (LKR 62,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $235 (LKR 75,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 250 km journey, about 5 h of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How long does it take from the airport to Trincomalee?
About 250 km and about five hours of driving, a little more with a lunch stop in Habarana or Dambulla.
What if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight, so the driver adjusts to the actual landing time. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after landing, which leaves time for immigration and bags.
We land late at night. Should we drive straight to Trincomalee?
We would suggest a night in Negombo first. The night surcharge applies, and elephants on the unlit Habarana to Kantale road are a real hazard after dark.
Can we stop at Dambulla or for lunch on the way?
Yes. Short breaks are part of a five-hour drive, and a visit to the Dambulla cave temple is easy to add when you book or on WhatsApp; stops are added to your quote.
Is there a train from the airport to Trincomalee?
Not directly. You would need to reach Colombo Fort first, and the train to Trincomalee takes most of a day.
How do I pay?
The fixed price is paid in full online by card when you book, so there is nothing to pay on arrival. On the last screen you can choose 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, but the trip then costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
Which airport is this?
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, about 30 km north of Colombo city, where all international flights land.
