A taxi from Trincomalee to Kandy covers 190 km in about 4 hours 10 minutes, in a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. It takes you from the beaches of the east coast, Nilaveli, Uppuveli and the town of Trincomalee with its fort and harbour, back across the dry plains of the north central province and up into the hills. Many travellers do the island in this order: the cultural triangle, a few days by the sea on the east coast in summer, then Kandy and the tea country. The road passes right by Dambulla and close to Sigiriya, so this trip can also be a day of sightseeing, with the luggage safe in the car, rather than just a transfer.

Journey details

The driver picks you up at your hotel in Trincomalee or Uppuveli. The route leaves the coast on the A6, heading southwest across flat country through Kantale, where the road runs along the embankment of a huge ancient reservoir, then through scrub and forest to Habarana, a junction town surrounded by safari lodges. From Habarana the A6 continues to Dambulla, past the turn for Sigiriya, about 20 minutes away. At Dambulla the driver joins the A9 and heads south through Naula and Matale, with its spice gardens and the rock monastery of Aluvihare, then Akurana and Katugastota into Kandy. Without stops, allow about 4 hours 10 minutes. Popular stops are the Dambulla cave temple, right on the A9 at the southern edge of town, a spice garden near Matale, or Sigiriya Rock if you have not climbed it yet, which turns the day into seven or eight hours. Give the exact name of your Kandy hotel: many sit on steep lanes above the lake.

The road

The first half is easy: a straight, flat two-lane road with light traffic, but a few hazards a local driver knows. Between Kantale and Habarana, the A6 passes through elephant country, and wild elephants cross or stand by the road, especially early in the morning and at dusk; drivers slow down and never stop next to them. There are police speed checks on the long straights. Habarana and Dambulla are busy junctions, with tour buses and lorries. South of Dambulla, the A9 is the main trunk road to the north and carries heavy traffic; it climbs gradually through Matale and becomes slower and more winding approaching Kandy. The last 15 km, through Akurana and over the Katugastota bridge, are often congested in the late afternoon, and Kandy's one-way system around the lake can add twenty minutes at peak time.

Recommended vehicle for this route

For one or two people with normal luggage, the economy sedan is enough for this road and is the lowest price on this page (three passengers, three bags). If you plan stops at Dambulla or Sigiriya, the comfort sedan, with room for four passengers and four bags, is nicer to come back to after a hot climb. Families and groups should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and parties of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Child seats are free if you ask. Your bags stay locked in the car during visits, and the air conditioning is a relief on the hot plains around Habarana in the middle of the day.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is a railway line from Trincomalee, but no direct train to Kandy: you would have to change trains at least once, and the timetables are limited. Buses run from Trincomalee to Kandy, often via Dambulla, and are cheap but slow and crowded, with little room for luggage. A tuk-tuk for this distance is impractical. Ride-hailing apps are rarely available outside the towns on the east coast. A private taxi is the most comfortable door-to-door option and the only one that lets you see Dambulla or Sigiriya on the way without carrying your bags.

Best time to travel this route

Trincomalee's beach season runs from about May to September, when the east coast is dry and calm, so most people make this trip in the summer. From about October to January the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain to Trincomalee and the plains; the A6 stays open, but storms can slow the drive, and Kandy is wet in those months too. Leave Trincomalee early, around 07:00, to avoid the midday heat if you plan visits, and to cross the elephant stretch in daylight. In July or August, during the Esala Perahera, streets in central Kandy close in the evenings for the processions, so aim to arrive in the afternoon. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%; booking more than 14 days ahead saves 5%.

How long does the drive take?

It is 190 km and about 4 hours 10 minutes without stops. With the Dambulla cave temple and a spice garden, plan on six hours or so.

Can we stop at Sigiriya or Dambulla on the way?

Yes. Dambulla is right on the route, and Sigiriya is a short detour from the A6. Your bags stay locked in the car while you visit. Tell us when you book or on WhatsApp so the driver can plan the day.

Will we see elephants?

Possibly. Wild elephants are often seen near the A6 between Kantale and Habarana, especially early in the morning and at dusk. For a proper sighting, the Minneriya or Kaudulla safari near Habarana is a separate outing.

We are staying in Nilaveli. Is this the right page?

Nilaveli, about 15 km further north, has its own fixed price to Kandy: choose Nilaveli as your pickup when you book and the price on screen follows. Pickups anywhere in Trincomalee town or Uppuveli are covered by this page; just give the hotel name.

Is there a direct train?

No. You would need to change trains, and the services are infrequent. Most people take a car or a bus.

How do I pay?

You pay the full price online by card when you book, and there is nothing to pay the driver. You can also pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
