A taxi from Ella to Colombo is the drive that takes you out of the hill country and back to the capital in one go: 205 km and about five hours, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. People book it at the end of a circuit to spend a last night or two in the city, for shopping, a meeting or a final dinner before flying home, or simply because the train back takes most of the day. This page covers drop-offs anywhere in Colombo, from Fort and Galle Face to Colombo 3, 4 and 7, Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia. If you are going straight to the airport, book the separate Ella to Colombo Airport page, which follows a different route.

Journey details
The usual route climbs out of Ella towards Bandarawela, then runs along the ridge to Haputale, where on a clear morning the view falls away across the southern plains. At Beragala the road starts its long descent through Haldummulla to Belihuloya, then continues west along the foot of the hills through Balangoda and Pelmadulla to Ratnapura, the gem-mining town, roughly the halfway point. From Ratnapura the A4 runs on through Avissawella and the rubber country, and the last hour is spent in the suburbs of Homagama, Maharagama and Nugegoda before you reach the city. Some drivers prefer the alternative via Wellawaya and the Southern Expressway, longer in distance but often similar in time, especially on a weekday afternoon when the A4 into Colombo is crowded. Without stops, plan on about five hours. With lunch and one visit, plan on six.
The road
The first stretch from Ella to Bandarawela is narrow and busy with tuk-tuks and tour vans, and the drive along the Haputale ridge is slow but beautiful. The descent from Beragala to Belihuloya is the steepest part of the day: a run of tight hairpins with long drops on the valley side, where the driver takes it carefully in a low gear. After Balangoda the road eases and the country opens out into paddy fields and rubber. The real slowdown comes at the end. The A4 from Avissawella into Colombo is suburban for its last 30 km or so, with traffic lights, markets and bus stops, and between about 16:00 and 19:00 it can take an hour to cover the last stretch. The driver knows the back roads into Colombo 5 and 7 and uses them when the main road is blocked.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Five hours is a long time in a car, so pick the vehicle for comfort as well as space. The economy sedan suits up to three people travelling light who want the lowest price. For a couple, the comfort sedan is the better choice on this trip: more legroom, a softer ride on the hairpins below Haputale and room for four bags, which you will need if you have bought tea and souvenirs along the way. Families of four or more should take the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. Your bags stay locked in the car if you stop for lunch or a visit, and the driver unloads them at your Colombo hotel door.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
The train from Ella to Colombo Fort is the famous hill-country line in reverse, but the whole journey takes most of the day, often nine to ten hours, and reserved seats on the popular trains sell out well ahead in the dry season. Many people ride only the scenic section from Ella to Nanu Oya or Kandy and take a car for the rest. Long-distance buses run from Ella and Bandarawela towards Colombo; they are cheap but slow, often crowded, and awkward with large luggage. If you want to break the journey with a night in Ratnapura, near Sinharaja or on the south coast, car hire with driver by the day may suit you better than a single transfer.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Ella early, around 07:00, and you cross the Haputale ridge while the view is still clear, before the afternoon mist rolls up the slopes, and reach Colombo by early afternoon, ahead of the evening rush. A late-morning departure is fine too, but you will meet the city traffic between 16:00 and 19:00. The hills around Ella and Haputale are wettest with the north-east monsoon, roughly October to January, when showers can make the descent slower; the Ratnapura side gets heavy rain with the south-west monsoon, from about May to September. Weekends and public holidays are usually lighter in Colombo itself. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
