The E03 runs into the E01 Southern Expressway, which carries the journey as far as the Imaduwa or Kokmaduwa interchange depending on where you are staying, after which the A2 coast road covers the last stretch. One hundred and sixty kilometres and two hours fifty in total. The expressway portion is entirely predictable; the A2 at the end is the variable part, and it is a slow, busy coastal road shared with the railway, tuk-tuks and school traffic.

The single most useful thing to tell us is your exact property, because “Ahangama” on a booking confirmation can mean any of six or seven kilometres of coast. The name is used loosely for a stretch that runs from Kathaluwa through Midigama to Ahangama proper, and the difference between the ends of it is a fifteen-minute drive, not a walk. A large share of the villas are inland, up narrow lanes off the A2 that wind between paddy and palm and are not signed. Several are on sand or broken concrete rather than tarmac. A car manages nearly all of them; a loaded van is more selective, and in the wet months the inland lanes soften. The stilt fishermen you will have seen in photographs are along this stretch and at Koggala just to the west, and are largely a paid photo arrangement now rather than fishing, which drivers will tell you honestly if you ask.

Boards decide this one. Ahangama and neighbouring Midigama are the reason our vans carry board racks, and anything over seven feet needs the comfort van with a row folded flat; nothing shorter than that is a problem in any of our vehicles. Give us the length at booking rather than at the airport, where the answer becomes a second car. For two travellers without boards the economy sedan is right, and its size genuinely helps on the inland lanes. For four with luggage the comfort sedan takes a case each; for five or six the comfort van is the sensible choice, with the caveat above about where it can and cannot go.

There is no useful way to arrive here on public transport with luggage. The coastal train stops at Ahangama, and it is a fine ride from Galle or Matara once you are settled, but reaching it from the airport means a transfer to Colombo Fort, a slow train and then a tuk-tuk on an unlit road to a villa nobody can find in the dark. Expressway buses reach Galle quickly and leave twenty-five kilometres unsolved. This is a route where the private car is the practical option on arrival and the train is the pleasant one afterwards.

The surf season on this coast runs from November to April, which is also the dry season and the busy one; the swell is consistent and the water clear. From May to September the south-west monsoon arrives, the sea turns messy, rain comes in the afternoons, and the whole stretch empties and halves in price. Neither is wrong, they simply suit different trips, and the drive takes the same two hours fifty either way. What does change with the season is the last kilometre: in the wet months the inland lanes are softer and a heavily loaded van will take the longer tarmac approach. Arriving before dark is worth arranging if you can, because very little out here is lit.
