Batticaloa is the main town of Sri Lanka’s east coast, built on islands and shores around a long lagoon, with a Dutch fort, a lively Tamil centre and Kallady beach just across the bridge. Few travellers stay more than a night or two, but many pass through: it sits between the calm bay of Pasikuda to the north and the surf of Arugam Bay to the south, at the end of the road and rail line from Polonnaruwa. Every taxi and transfer from Batticaloa has a fixed price for the whole vehicle: an economy sedan for up to three people, a comfort sedan for four, or a six- or eight-seat van, with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to settle with the driver on arrival; or you pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Batticaloa to Pasikuda is 35 km, about 55 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000). Batticaloa to Arugam Bay is 120 km, about 2 h 40, from $70 (Rs 21,000), and Colombo Airport is 285 km, about 6 h 10, from $170 (Rs 54,500).

Batticaloa

Batticaloa Dutch Fort

Allow 1 h

Founded by the Portuguese and taken by the Dutch in 1638, the fort sits on the island at the heart of Batticaloa, its thick walls facing the lagoon on two sides and a moat on the others. You can walk around the ramparts and through the old gate. It is a few minutes from most guesthouses, so ask your driver to stop here on the way in or out of Batticaloa, and come in the morning light.

Best time : Morning, before the heat

Batticaloa

Kallady Bridge and the Singing Fish

Allow 1 h

The old iron Lady Manning bridge at Kallady is where Batticaloa’s famous legend lives: on still nights, people report a faint humming from the lagoon, the so-called singing fish. Nobody can promise you will hear it, but the sunset over the water is reason enough. A taxi from your Batticaloa guesthouse avoids walking back along unlit lagoon roads. Driver’s tip: choose a calm evening near the full moon, in the drier months.

Best time : Calm evenings, full moon

Batticaloa

Batticaloa Lagoon by Boat and the Lighthouse

≈ 10 min by carAllow 2 h

The long Batticaloa lagoon is the town’s other monument: fishermen casting from narrow canoes, egrets on the mud flats and mangrove edges full of birds. Local boatmen offer trips on the water, arranged directly with them. Your driver takes you to the shore, then on to the lighthouse where the lagoon meets the sea, a short ride north of Batticaloa town. Go late in the day, when the light softens and the birds return to roost.

Best time : Late afternoon, April to September

Batticaloa

Mamangam Temple (Mamangeswarar Kovil), Amirthakali

≈ 15 min by carAllow 1 h

On the edge of Batticaloa at Amirthakali, the Mamangam temple is one of the most revered Hindu shrines of the east, and its festival in July or August draws pilgrims from all over the region. The temple and its sacred pond are a short taxi ride from town, easy to combine with the fort and the lagoon in one morning. Dress modestly, leave your shoes in the car, and let your driver suggest the quietest hour.

Best time : Morning, festival in July or August

Pasikuda Bay

55 min by car · 35 kmAllow 4 h

North of Batticaloa on the coast road, Pasikuda bay is protected by an offshore reef, so the water stays shallow and calm far out from the sand, ideal for children and nervous swimmers. A day trip from Batticaloa gives you a long swim, lunch and the emptier Kalkudah beach next door. Your driver waits with your things in the car. Come between April and September, when the east coast is at its calmest.

Polonnaruwa and Gal Vihara

2 h 15 by car · 100 kmAllow 4 h

Polonnaruwa is the closest of the ancient capitals to Batticaloa, reached by the A11 once it leaves the coast near Valaichchenai. The carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara and the Sacred Quadrangle are the highlights, spread out enough that a car between them saves your energy. Do it as a long day trip from Batticaloa, or as the first stop on a transfer west towards Sigiriya with your luggage in the boot. Be back on the road before dusk.

Arugam Bay via the Coast Road

2 h 40 by car · 120 kmAllow 3 h

South of Batticaloa, the A4 runs down the coast through Kattankudy, Kalmunai and Pottuvil to Arugam Bay, the surf capital of the east. Most travellers make this drive with their bags as the next leg of the trip, stopping for tea in a market town and at the Pottuvil lagoon. Surfboards travel best in a van, so mention them when booking. The waves are at their best from roughly May to September.

Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Batticaloa?

In town, the tuk-tuk is the cab service everyone uses. They are easy to find at the bus stand, the station and on the main streets, and a ride across the bridge to Kallady is short; agree the fare first. You may find PickMe tuk-tuks in town, but cars on the app are rare and Uber is absent, and nobody on an app takes a long ride to Arugam Bay or the airport at a guaranteed price.

Batticaloa is one of the few east-coast towns with a railway station, the end of the line that comes through Polonnaruwa, with trains to Colombo Fort including an overnight service. It is cheap and a genuine option if you travel light and are going to central Colombo; it does not stop at the airport and takes most of a night. Buses leave the central bus stand for Colombo, Kandy and Trincomalee, and south along the coast through Kalmunai; Arugam Bay usually means a change on the way, and the coastal buses fill up. Domestic flights are not a practical option for most visitors. For arrival and departure days, or to carry on down the coast with your bags, a pre-booked taxi at one agreed price is the straightforward choice.

Where we pick up in Batticaloa

We collect from any hotel or guesthouse in Batticaloa town, on the lagoon shore and at Kallady beach, and from the railway station and the central bus stand. Give us the exact property name when you book: several lagoon guesthouses sit down narrow lanes and sand tracks where a street name is not enough, and the name is what gets the driver to your door. For a train arrival, give us the train and the driver meets the actual arrival. For guests landing at Colombo Airport, the driver waits in arrivals with a name board, we track the flight and 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free; the airport to Batticaloa costs $170 (Rs 54,500). Everywhere else, 15 minutes of waiting are included. You receive the driver’s name, phone number and vehicle on WhatsApp before pickup. For Arugam Bay with surfboards, tell us when booking: boards travel best in a van, and we send one that fits them.

Getting to and from Batticaloa

The old town, with the fort, the market and the government offices, stands on an island in the lagoon, joined to the mainland by short bridges. East of it, the Kallady bridge crosses to Kallady and the beach; the lighthouse stands north, where the lagoon meets the sea. Along the lagoon, guesthouses spread out in quiet streets, some on sand. North on the A15 coast road, Pasikuda is 35 km and about 55 min; Trincomalee is 140 km and about 3 h 05. Inland, the A11 leaves the coast near Valaichchenai and leads west to Polonnaruwa, 100 km and about 2 h 15, then past Minneriya (120 km, 2 h 40) to Habarana, the junction for Sigiriya (145 km, 3 h 15) and Dambulla (155 km, 3 h 25). South, the A4 runs down the coast through Kattankudy, Kalmunai, Akkaraipattu and Pottuvil to Arugam Bay, 120 km and about 2 h 40. Colombo Airport is 285 km and about 6 h 10, through Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Kurunegala.

Travel tips for Batticaloa

Batticaloa follows the east-coast seasons. The dry, calm months run roughly from April to September, the best time for the beaches north and south; from about November to February the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain, and low-lying roads around the lagoon can flood after a storm. Dress modestly in town and at temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and take shoes off where asked. Batticaloa is a good place to break the long drive between the cultural triangle and Arugam Bay: Polonnaruwa in the morning, the lagoon at sunset, and the coast road south the next day. On the A11, wild elephants sometimes stand near the road at dusk, so daylight driving is safer. A 15% night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, a 10% high-season supplement from 15 December to 15 January, and bookings made more than 14 days ahead cost 5% less; all of this is shown before you pay. For several days on the east coast with the same driver, see our car hire with driver on /private-driver; extra stops on a single transfer are arranged on WhatsApp after booking.

About Batticaloa

The Dutch fort, on the island at the heart of town, was founded by the Portuguese in the 1620s and taken by the Dutch in 1638. Its thick walls face the lagoon on two sides and a moat on the others, and you can walk around them and through the gate. The lagoon is the town’s other monument: fishermen in narrow canoes, egrets on the mud flats and long views at sunset from the waterside. It is also the home of Batticaloa’s best-known legend, the singing fish. On calm nights, especially around the full moon in the drier months, people report a faint musical humming coming from the water near the Kallady bridge; fishermen used to listen with an oar pressed to the ear. Nobody has fully explained it, and nobody can promise you will hear it, but a still evening on the bridge is worth it anyway.

The old iron bridge at Kallady, known as the Lady Manning bridge, now stands beside a newer road bridge. Beyond it, Kallady beach is long, wide and mostly empty. The lighthouse at the lagoon mouth makes a good walk for the evening light. Batticaloa is also a Tamil town with a strong Hindu, Christian and Muslim mix: temples painted in bright colours, churches from the colonial period, and the Mamangam temple at Amirthakali, whose festival in July or August draws pilgrims from across the east. Kattankudy, just south, is a busy Muslim town on the way to Arugam Bay.
