Nilaveli taxi & cab service at fixed prices
Taxi from Nilaveli from $35 (Rs 11,000) per vehicle, not per person
Nilaveli is a long, straight beach of pale sand north of Trincomalee, wider and quieter than Uppuveli, with Pigeon Island National Park a short boat ride offshore. Hotels and guesthouses are spread along several kilometres of coast road, with little in the way of a village centre, so a car booked in advance is how most guests arrive and leave. Every taxi and transfer from Nilaveli has a fixed price for the whole vehicle, whether you take an economy sedan for up to three people, a comfort sedan for four, or a six- or eight-seat van. Driver, fuel, tolls and parking are included. You pay the full price online by card when you book, so there is nothing to hand the driver when you reach the coast; if you prefer, you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, an option that costs 10% more. Nilaveli to Trincomalee is 15 km, about 25 min, from $35 (Rs 11,000). Nilaveli to Sigiriya is 115 km, about 2 h 35, from $65 (Rs 20,000), and Colombo Airport is 270 km, about 5 h 50, from $165 (Rs 51,500).

Things to do by taxi around Nilaveli
Half-day and day trips from Nilaveli that travellers book again and again, with the drive time and the fixed price per car. Swipe through, pick one, and book the ride.
Prices are per vehicle and fixed before you book. For several stops in one day with the car waiting for you, a driver for the day is usually simpler.
Private taxi, tuk-tuk, ride-hailing app or train in Nilaveli?
For short hops, tuk-tuks are the local cab service. Drivers wait near the larger hotels and along the coast road, and a ride into Trincomalee or to a restaurant in Uppuveli costs a few hundred rupees more than a trip within the beach; agree the fare before you get in. PickMe runs tuk-tuks in Trincomalee, but fewer come out as far as Nilaveli, cars on the app are scarce, and Uber is practically absent on this coast. For a long ride, the apps are not built for it: a request for Sigiriya or the airport usually gets no answer, and a driver who accepts may cancel once he sees the distance.
Nilaveli has no railway station. The nearest is Trincomalee, with trains to Colombo Fort including an overnight service; it is cheap, slow, ends far from the airport, and you still need a tuk-tuk to the station. Local buses run along the coast road between Trincomalee and the villages further north and will stop for you at the roadside. From the Trincomalee bus stand, long-distance buses leave for Colombo, Kandy and Anuradhapura, but Sigiriya means changing at Habarana, and a bus with suitcases and snorkelling gear is hard work in the heat. On the day you arrive or leave, a pre-booked taxi with one agreed price is the simple option.

Where we pick up in Nilaveli
We collect from any hotel, resort or guesthouse in Nilaveli, from the larger resorts on the beach road to the small places down sand lanes towards the sea. Give us the exact property name rather than “Nilaveli beach”: the name is what gets the driver to the right gate, and a few lanes are soft sand where he may ask you to walk the last metres. At resorts with a gated drive, the driver waits at reception. A hotel in Uppuveli or Trincomalee town is booked from Trincomalee, not from here. Arriving from Colombo Airport, your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board; we track the flight and include 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, and the airport to Nilaveli costs $165 (Rs 51,500). Everywhere else, 15 minutes of waiting are included. The driver’s name, phone number and car details reach you on WhatsApp before the pickup. If you travel with dive gear, a surfboard or a pram, tell us when booking so we send a vehicle with room for it.
Getting to and from Nilaveli
Nilaveli stretches along the coast road that runs north from Trincomalee through Uppuveli and on towards Kuchchaveli. The beach faces east, so the sun rises over the sea, and most hotels sit between the road and the sand. Trincomalee town is 15 km south, about 25 min. Every trip inland goes back through Trincomalee first. The A6 then runs south-west past the Kantale reservoir to Habarana, the junction for Sigiriya (115 km, 2 h 35) and Minneriya (100 km, 2 h 15); Polonnaruwa is 115 km and about 2 h 35. The A12 heads west through Horowpathana to Mihintale (105 km) and Anuradhapura, 120 km and about 2 h 40. Colombo Airport is the long transfer: 270 km and about 5 h 50 via Habarana, Dambulla and Kurunegala. At the beach itself, distances are short but the strip is long: walking from one end to the other in the midday sun is more than most people want, so a tuk-tuk for dinner at another hotel is normal.
Travel tips for Nilaveli
The east coast runs on the opposite calendar to Colombo, Galle and Mirissa. From about May to September Nilaveli is dry, the sea is flat and Pigeon Island boats run every day; this is when the beach is at its best. From October or November to January or February the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain and rough water, boats stop, and some hotels close for the season. That makes Nilaveli the natural beach stop for a trip in the European summer, after Sigiriya, Dambulla or Polonnaruwa. On the A6 between Kantale and Habarana, wild elephants cross the road, especially at dusk, so we prefer to drive this stretch in daylight. For a flight from Colombo, count backwards: 5 h 50 of road plus about three hours at the airport. A 15% night surcharge applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00, a 10% high-season supplement from 15 December to 15 January, and you pay 5% less when you book more than 14 days ahead; all of this is shown before you pay. Nilaveli has few shops beyond the hotels, so Trincomalee is where to find banks and supermarkets. For several days touring the cultural triangle with the same driver, see our car hire with driver on /private-driver.
About Nilaveli
Pigeon Island National Park is the reason many people choose Nilaveli. It is two small islands off the beach, the larger one rocky and named after the rock pigeons that nest there, with a shallow coral reef on its sheltered side. Snorkellers regularly see turtles, reef fish and small blacktip reef sharks in water only a few metres deep. Boats leave from Nilaveli beach in the morning; the boat and the park ticket are paid locally, not through us. Go early, before the wind picks up and before the day boats arrive, and do not stand on the coral.
The beach itself is the other attraction: long, uncrowded and, in season, with a sea calm enough to swim far out. Whale and dolphin boats leave from the Trincomalee side on calm mornings, roughly from March to August, with no guarantee of sightings. Trincomalee itself is worth half a day: Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock, the deer inside Fort Frederick and the market streets. Inland, the Kanniya hot wells, seven small springs of different temperatures, make an easy stop on the way west, and Velgam Vehera, an old Buddhist site in the scrub north-west of Trincomalee, is quiet enough to have to yourself.
