Journey details
From the airport at Katunayake the driver takes the Katunayake Expressway towards Colombo, then the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city to the Southern Expressway near Kottawa. The motorway runs south through suburbs and then rubber and paddy country. Depending on where your hotel is, the driver leaves the expressway at Dodangoda or Welipenna and cuts west on country roads to the coast, reaching the Galle Road at Beruwala. The hotels along Moragalla and the beach south towards Bentota are a few minutes further. Without stops, plan on about 1 hour 40 minutes. The old route down the Galle Road through Colombo, Mount Lavinia and Kalutara is shorter on the map but much slower, and the driver uses it only if there is a problem on the expressway.
The road
The Katunayake Expressway is quick except at the Colombo end in the morning and evening rush, and the Outer Circular takes you round the city rather than through it. The Southern Expressway is a fenced motorway with a 100 km/h limit and no tuk-tuks or junctions, so the first hour is calm. The roads from the exit to the coast are narrower, passing through villages, rubber smallholdings and small towns where buses stop in the road. The Galle Road through Beruwala is a busy two-lane coast road, and the area around the fishing harbour and the market can be congested in the morning. Most beach hotels sit on short side roads between the Galle Road and the sea; the driver knows them and goes right to the entrance.
Recommended vehicle for this route
On a drive of under two hours, the economy sedan is perfectly adequate for up to three people with three bags, and it is the lowest price on this page. The comfort sedan suits couples or small families who want more room after a long flight, with space for four passengers and four bags. Families and groups with plenty of luggage should take the Comfort van (6 seats), and parties of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request. Because Beruwala is close to the airport, it is also an easy place to spend your last night; the reverse trip back for a flight is quick and predictable at most times of day.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no direct public transport from the airport to Beruwala. The budget route is a bus into Colombo, then the coastal train south to Beruwala station or a bus along the Galle Road, with a change and a lot of luggage handling. The coastal railway is pleasant but slow and crowded at peak times, and the Galle Road bus stops everywhere. PickMe and Uber can work from the airport, but availability for a one-way trip out of the city is not guaranteed. A private transfer is the simplest way from the arrivals hall to your hotel door, at any hour your flight lands, with a fixed price agreed before you travel.
Best time to travel this route
The west coast season runs from about November to April, when the sea at Beruwala is calm and the beaches are at their best. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough sea, red flags and frequent showers, though many hotels stay open and prices are lower. Your flight decides when you travel: the driver tracks your flight and waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge. A night arrival is common, and a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 carries a 15% night surcharge; the expressway is nearly empty at that hour. Daytime arrivals may meet slower traffic at the Colombo end of the Katunayake Expressway. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
