Taxi from Colombo Airport to Dambulla, fixed price private transfer

The E03 takes you clear of Colombo, then the A6 runs north-east through Kurunegala and on to Dambulla. One hundred and forty kilometres and three hours fifteen. The A6 is a good two-lane road for most of its length, largely straight, through coconut plantations and small towns, and the driving is far less demanding than any hill-country route. This is also a hot, low-altitude journey: the cultural triangle is consistently the warmest part of the island, and you notice the difference by the time you reach Kurunegala.

Two places slow this route down, and neither is dramatic. The A6 passes straight through the middle of Kurunegala, where a one-way system around the clock tower costs ten to fifteen minutes in the middle of the day. The second is Dambulla junction itself, which is where the island’s largest wholesale vegetable market sits. That market runs overnight, and the lorry traffic around the junction is heaviest between roughly midnight and six in the morning, which is precisely when a passenger from a European flight arrives. It is not dangerous, but it is slow and loud, and it is the reason your driver may approach your hotel from a different direction at four in the morning than at four in the afternoon. Hotels around Kandalama lake, east of town, are reached by several kilometres of quiet road through scrub where elephants occasionally cross at dusk.

Nothing about this road tests a vehicle, so choose on space and on what you are doing tomorrow. For two people the economy sedan is genuinely sufficient for three and a quarter hours of good road. The question worth thinking about is whether you are keeping the car: a great many people who come to Dambulla want the same vehicle and driver for the following two days to reach Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Minneriya, and that is both cheaper arranged as an extension of this booking than as a separate day hire, and better, because by then the driver knows where you want to be at sunrise. If that is your plan, take the comfort van for five or more and tell us on WhatsApp once you have booked so the driver plans to stay in the area.

There is no useful train to Dambulla; the nearest line serves Habarana and the connections are poor and slow. Intercity buses run from Colombo and are cheap and reasonably quick, but they start in the city rather than at the airport and leave you at the junction with your luggage and a tuk-tuk ride still to arrange in the heat. For the cultural triangle the private transfer is the practical option rather than the comfortable one, and it is why nearly every visitor here arrives by road.

Leave early enough to arrive in daylight if you can, mostly because hotel access roads out here are unlit and often unpaved. The cave temple is best visited before ten in the morning or after three in the afternoon: the climb to the caves is a long flight of open steps and the rock underfoot is genuinely too hot to walk barefoot in the middle of the day, and shoes must come off at the entrance. May to September is the dry, hot season in the triangle, which is also the best time to be here. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from November into December; it makes the temple steps slippery but has little effect on the drive itself.
