A taxi from Negombo to Galle covers about 155 km in about two hours and forty minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle with all the expressway tolls included, from your hotel in Negombo to your hotel in Galle or inside Galle Fort. It is the usual move for travellers who slept their first night near the airport and are heading straight to the south coast, and it is much quicker than it looks on a map, because the route goes around Colombo on three expressways rather than through it.

Journey details
From Negombo the driver joins the E03 Colombo to Katunayake Expressway, then turns off at Kerawalapitiya onto the Outer Circular Expressway, which loops around the eastern edge of Colombo through Kadawatha and Kaduwela to Kottawa. At Kottawa the road becomes the E01 Southern Expressway, which runs south through inland rubber and paddy country, with a service area at Welipenna, to the Pinnaduwa exit for Galle. From there it is a few minutes to the town and the fort. Three expressways in a row means you see little of Colombo and almost none of the coast until the end. If you would rather follow the sea through Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Bentota and Hikkaduwa, say so when you book: that way takes over four hours without stops, but it passes the Bentota river, the turtle hatcheries at Kosgoda and the beaches. The expressway route takes about two hours and forty minutes.
The road
The expressways are the best roads in the country: fenced, lit at the interchanges, with a 100 km/h limit on the E01 and toll plazas at each end that are included in your price. The slow parts are before and after them. Leaving Negombo in the morning, the stretch past the bus stand and the lagoon bridge can be congested, and the Outer Circular is busier at its Kadawatha and Kottawa ends during weekday rush hours. On Friday evenings and holiday weekends, the E01 fills with Colombo families heading south, and the queue at the Galle exit can take a while. In Galle, the approach to the fort runs past the bus stand and the cricket stadium, the busiest corner of the town. Inside the fort, lanes are narrow and the car may stop a few metres from a small hotel.
Recommended vehicle for this route
For two or three hours on smooth expressways, choose on space rather than ride. The economy sedan suits a couple with two cases. Four adults with full luggage, or a couple with surfboards for Hikkaduwa or Weligama, are better in the comfort sedan or the 6-seat comfort van; boards travel inside the van. Families of five or six take the 6-seat comfort van, groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Galle Fort’s lanes are tight but every car can reach the main hotels. If you have just arrived on a long-haul flight, the comfort sedan’s reclining seats make it easier to sleep through the motorway section. Child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no direct train or bus from Negombo to Galle. By rail you take a train from Negombo to Colombo Fort, then the coastal line to Galle, which is scenic but adds up to four or five hours with the change and the wait. Expressway buses to Galle leave from the Colombo side, so you first need to get from Negombo to a departure point with your luggage. Ride-hailing cars can be booked in Negombo, but drivers often decline long trips to the south, and prices are not fixed in advance in the way ours are. For a group with luggage, the private car is the simple answer.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Negombo at about 09:00, after the local morning rush, and you are in Galle before noon; or leave after an early lunch and arrive mid-afternoon. Avoid Friday evenings and the start of long weekends, when the Southern Expressway is full of weekenders. The south coast is in season from December to April; from May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to Galle and its beaches, though the expressway is unaffected. A pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and the 15 December to 15 January high season adds 10%, which is also the busiest fortnight on the road south.

How long is the drive from Negombo to Galle?
About 155 km and about two hours and forty minutes on the expressways around Colombo. The coast road takes well over four hours.
Do we go through Colombo?
No. The driver takes the E03, the Outer Circular Expressway and the E01, which skirt the city completely.
Can we take the coast road and stop at a turtle hatchery?
Yes, ask when you book. The coast road through Bentota and Kosgoda is much slower, and stops are added to your quote.
Is there a train from Negombo to Galle?
Not directly. You need to change at Colombo Fort, which with luggage makes it a long day.
Can you pick us up from the airport instead of Negombo?
Yes. The airport transfer to Galle has its own page, with flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.
How do I pay?
The fixed price is paid in full online by card when you book, and there is nothing to pay the driver. On the last screen you can choose to pay 50% online and the rest in cash, but the trip then costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
