A taxi from Bandaranaike International Airport to Kalutara covers 75 km in about 1 hour 20 minutes, in a private car with an English-speaking driver at a fixed price per vehicle. Kalutara is the first real beach town south of Colombo, where the Kalu Ganga, the Black River, meets the sea under a great white stupa. Its hotels line the shore north and south of the river mouth, from Wadduwa and Kalutara North down to Katukurunda, and it is the closest stretch of resort coast to the airport after Negombo. That makes it a good choice for a first or last night, or for a short break with little time on the road. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, follows your flight, and waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start
The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Kalutara. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Kalutara, the price stays the same.
You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.
Journey details
From the airport the driver takes the Katunayake Expressway, then the Outer Circular Expressway round Colombo, and joins the Southern Expressway at Kottawa. The car leaves it at the Dodangoda interchange, the exit for Kalutara, and drives west through rubber land and villages down to the Galle Road. Hotels north of the river at Kalutara North and Wadduwa are reached by turning north along the coast; those at Katukurunda and the south side of town are just across the bridge. Without stops, allow about 1 hour 20 minutes. At quiet times, or for a hotel right at the north end near Wadduwa, the driver may take the Galle Road through Colombo instead, but in daytime the expressway is almost always faster. Tolls are included in the price.
The road
The expressways are straightforward, and the main delays come from Colombo’s rush hours, when traffic queues at the Peliyagoda end of the Katunayake Expressway and at some Outer Circular junctions. After Dodangoda the road to the coast is an ordinary two-lane road with tuk-tuks and buses. In Kalutara the Galle Road narrows through the town centre and over the bridge, which is often slow. On the south bank, right by the bridge, stands the Kalutara Bodhiya with its hollow white stupa; many Sri Lankan drivers pull in briefly to drop a coin in the offering box and ask for a safe journey. If your driver does, it takes a minute, and you are welcome to walk inside the stupa.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Economy sedan
On a transfer of 1 hour 20 minutes, the economy sedan is the obvious choice for one to three people with three bags, and it is the cheapest price shown above. Couples with big suitcases and golf bags or diving gear will find the comfort sedan easier, with four seats and space for four bags. Families should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups or wedding parties of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Most Kalutara hotels have proper drives off the Galle Road, so any vehicle reaches the door. Child seats are free on request, and it is worth fitting them even for a short trip on the busy Galle Road.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Kalutara has stations on the coastal railway, and trains from Colombo Fort stop at Kalutara North and Kalutara South, but no train runs from the airport, so you would need to cross Colombo first. Buses run along the Galle Road all day, slow and crowded, with no space for luggage at busy times. PickMe and Uber work well within Colombo and can sometimes be booked from the airport, though price and acceptance vary for a long trip out of the city. A private taxi is the simplest option after a flight, with a fixed price agreed before you land and a driver already waiting when you come through customs.
Best time to travel this route
The beach season on this coast is roughly November to April, with calm sea and sunshine. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rough surf and frequent rain, and swimming in front of most Kalutara hotels is unsafe, though pools stay open and the drive is unaffected. On weekdays, avoid leaving the airport between about 07:00 and 09:30 or 16:30 and 19:00 if you can, when Colombo traffic adds time to an otherwise short trip. Many flights arrive or leave at night: a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%. Booking more than 14 days before travel takes 5% off the fixed price.
