A taxi from Kalutara to Colombo Airport covers 75 km in about 1 hour 20 minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, with expressway tolls included and the pickup timed to your flight. Kalutara is the closest of the west coast beach towns to the airport that still feels like a holiday rather than a suburb, which makes it a popular last stop: a few days by the pool at the mouth of the Kalu Ganga, then an easy run to the terminal. The drive is short enough that you can enjoy a final morning on the beach, and predictable enough that you can plan it to the quarter hour.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start
The price covers the journey between Kalutara and Colombo Airport (CMB). At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Kalutara, the price stays the same.
You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.
Journey details
The driver avoids central Colombo altogether. From Kalutara the car heads inland to the Dodangoda interchange and joins the E01 Southern Expressway northbound. At Kottawa, on the south-eastern edge of the capital, it switches to the E02 Outer Circular Expressway, which loops round the east of the city through Kaduwela and Kadawatha to Kerawalapitiya, where it meets the E03 for the last stretch north to Katunayake. That is motorway for nearly the whole distance, which is why 75 km takes about 1 hour 20 minutes even at busy times. For a flight at 01:00, allowing three hours at the airport and a half-hour buffer, the pickup is around 20:10; for a 10:00 departure, around 05:10. If you are staying north of the river at Wadduwa or Kalutara North, give the hotel name and the driver will choose the quickest way onto the expressway.
The road
Kalutara’s hotels are spread out: some on the beach north of the river, some on the long strip to the south at Katukurunda, and several resorts further up at Wadduwa, so the property name matters more than the town. The Galle Road through Kalutara is narrow and busy, and the bridge over the Kalu Ganga, next to the great white stupa of the Kalutara Bodhiya, is a bottleneck in both directions. Many Sri Lankan drivers stop briefly at the Bodhiya to leave a coin in the offering box for a safe journey; if yours does, it takes a minute. The road inland to Dodangoda is a two-lane country road through rubber and coconut, slow behind buses but short. Once on the expressway there are no traffic lights until the airport, and the tolls are already in your price.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Economy sedan
A departure is the trip where luggage counts most, because most people go home with more than they brought. The economy sedan takes three passengers with three bags; if you have bought tea, batik or a set of wooden masks, size up to the comfort sedan, which takes four people and four bags. Families of five or six with checked cases need the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Golf bags, surfboards and prams fit in the vans; mention them when you book so the right vehicle turns up. Child seats are free on request. The driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge, which covers a slow checkout.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
Kalutara has a railway station on the coastal line, and the train to Colombo Fort is cheap and pleasant, running beside the sea for much of the way. But it goes to Fort, not to the airport, which is about 35 km further north, so you would still need a taxi or an airport bus from the city with your bags. Buses along the Galle Road are frequent and stop everywhere. Ride-hailing apps can work in Kalutara, but a booking for the airport at night is not guaranteed to be accepted. For a flight, a pre-booked car with a fixed price, a pickup time agreed in advance and a driver confirmed on WhatsApp removes the guesswork.
Best time to travel this route
The expressway route is reliable at any hour, so plan around your flight rather than the traffic. One detail is worth knowing: a pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15% to the price, and many long-haul flights leave after midnight. If your flight lets you reach the terminal before 22:00, as in the 01:00 example above, you stay outside the night window and have a calm wait airside. The south-west monsoon, from May to September, brings heavy showers to Kalutara and can briefly slow the expressway; leave ten minutes earlier on a wet evening. From December to April the coast is dry and the roads around Colombo are busier with holiday traffic.

How much is a taxi from Kalutara to Colombo Airport (CMB)?
A private taxi from Kalutara to Colombo Airport (CMB) costs $41 (LKR 13,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $47 (LKR 15,000) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $55 (LKR 17,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $70 (LKR 21,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 75 km journey, about 1 h 20 of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How long does it take from Kalutara to the airport?
About 1 hour 20 minutes for the 75 km, almost all of it on the E01, E02 and E03 expressways, which bypass central Colombo.
What time should we leave for our flight?
Allow the drive, three hours at the airport for an international flight and a half-hour buffer. For a 01:00 departure that means leaving around 20:10; for a 10:00 departure, around 05:10.
Does the driver go through Colombo?
No. He takes the Southern Expressway to Kottawa and the Outer Circular Expressway round the east of the city, which is quicker and more predictable than crossing the centre.
Can we stop at the Kalutara Bodhiya on the way?
Yes, it is on the Galle Road by the bridge. A short stop is easy; for a proper visit, add it when you book or arrange it on WhatsApp, and dress with shoulders and knees covered.
We have a late flight. Can we leave the hotel later?
Yes. Choose your pickup time when you book; it does not need to be the earliest possible. Many people take a late checkout and leave in the early evening.
How do we pay?
You pay the full price online by card at booking, so nothing is due to the driver on the day. On the last screen you can choose 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, but the trip then costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
