Prices checked on 4 October 2026.

A taxi from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake to Pasikuda covers about 265 km in about 5 hours 45 minutes, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, straight from the arrivals hall to the east coast. Pasikuda is a long, shallow, sheltered bay north of Batticaloa, and from the airport it is a coast-to-coast crossing: you leave the humid west, cross the dry heart of the island past Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, and arrive on the Bay of Bengal. Your driver tracks your flight and waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no charge, so a delayed arrival costs you nothing.

City to city: choose your hotel from the start

The price covers the journey between Colombo Airport (CMB) and Pasikuda. At the airport your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name. At the other end, choose your hotel when you book or send the address on WhatsApp afterwards; anywhere inside Pasikuda, the price stays the same.

You pay online, securely by card, at the price above: fixed, all-inclusive, nothing left to pay on the day. Prefer to pay only 50% now and the rest to your driver? That option costs 10% more.

Journey details

From the airport the driver heads north-east through Minuwangoda and, where it saves time, along the Central Expressway towards Kurunegala. From Kurunegala the A6 runs north-east through Ibbagamuwa and Galewela to Dambulla and on to Habarana. At Habarana the car turns east onto the A11, past Minneriya and Giritale to Polonnaruwa, then through Manampitiya and Welikanda across the plains to the coast at Valaichchenai, a few minutes from the Pasikuda hotels. Without stops, allow about 5 hours 45 minutes. A lunch stop at Habarana and a short break somewhere quiet are normal on a drive this long. If you would like to visit Polonnaruwa’s ancient city on the way, it is possible, but it adds two to three hours and is better done on a fresh day.

The road

The first hour is the slowest part per kilometre: the roads out of Katunayake and through Minuwangoda are busy, and traffic is heavy in daytime. The A6 beyond Kurunegala is a good two-lane road, but Dambulla’s junction is congested and the stretch to Habarana carries trunk-road buses and lorries. East of Habarana the A11 runs through forest and past the Minneriya and Kaudulla parks, where wild elephants are often seen on or beside the road, especially from late afternoon. Further east, the stretch past Manampitiya and Welikanda is long and straight, with few fuel stops and elephant crossings after dark. Drivers on this route slow down at dusk and keep their distance from elephants; please do not ask them to stop beside one for a photo.

Recommended vehicle for this route

After a long-haul flight, almost six hours in the car is the second half of a very long day, so we would not choose the smallest vehicle here unless you travel light. The economy sedan fits three passengers with three bags. For a couple with two large cases, the comfort sedan’s extra legroom and four-bag boot make the trip much easier. Families arriving with a pile of luggage should book the Comfort van (6 seats), and groups of seven or eight the 8-seat van. Child seats are free on request, and it helps to say how old the children are so the right seats are fitted before the driver leaves for the airport.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

There is no simple public route from the airport. The train to the east coast leaves from Colombo Fort, not the airport, and runs via Polonnaruwa to Valaichchenai, the nearest station to Pasikuda, before continuing to Batticaloa; it takes most of a day, and you would first need to get from Katunayake to Colombo. Long-distance buses run from Colombo towards Valaichchenai and Batticaloa, including overnight services, but with luggage and after a flight they are hard going. Many arrivals in the small hours spend the first night in Negombo, about 10 km from the airport, and drive across the next morning. The direct taxi is the only way to go from the plane to the beach in one go.

Best time to travel this route

The east coast season runs from about April or May to September, when the sea in Pasikuda bay is calm, clear and shallow, while the west and south coasts have the monsoon. From about November to January the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain and rough sea to the east, and some resorts close or offer limited service. Many long-haul flights land at night or in the early morning; any pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00 adds 15%, and for a drive through elephant country the daylight hours are better anyway. If you land late, a night in Negombo and a 07:00 start puts you in Pasikuda by early afternoon. Between 15 December and 15 January the 10% high-season rate applies.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Pasikuda?

A private taxi from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Pasikuda costs $160 (LKR 50,500) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $185 (LKR 58,000) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $210 (LKR 66,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $250 (LKR 80,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). The price is per vehicle, not per person, and fixed before you travel for the whole 265 km journey, about 5 h 45 of driving. Fuel, tolls, parking and an English-speaking driver are included. Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long is the drive from the airport to Pasikuda?

About 5 hours 45 minutes for 265 km, without stops. With lunch at Habarana and a break, count on six and a half to seven hours.

What happens if our flight is late?

The driver tracks your flight and adjusts. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after landing, which is usually enough for immigration and baggage.

Will we see elephants on the way?

Quite possibly. The A11 east of Habarana passes the Minneriya and Kaudulla parks, and elephants are often seen near the road, especially in the late afternoon. The driver will not stop close to them.

Can we stop at Polonnaruwa or Dambulla?

Yes, both are on the route. Each stop is added to the quote as a fixed amount; ask when booking or on WhatsApp. Visiting Polonnaruwa properly adds two to three hours.

Is there a train to Pasikuda?

Not from the airport. The train from Colombo Fort stops at Valaichchenai, a short tuk-tuk ride from Pasikuda, and takes most of a day.

How do we pay for the transfer?

The full price is paid online by card when you book, so nothing is due on arrival. If you prefer, the last screen lets you pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, but the transfer then costs 10% more. We confirm on WhatsApp, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before pickup.
