The E03 links to the E01 Southern Expressway, which now runs well past Matara to the Beliatta interchange. From there it is roughly twenty kilometres on the A2 into Tangalle. Two hundred and twenty kilometres and three hours forty in total, and the figure is dependable because only that last twenty is ordinary road. Anyone quoting you five hours for this journey is working from a map drawn before the extension opened. Tolls, fuel and parking are all inside the price shown.

The beaches worth coming for are south and east of the town, at Goyambokka, Medaketiya and Rekawa, and they are reached by lanes running off the A2 that are sand and broken concrete rather than tarmac. Most are perfectly passable in a car; a heavily loaded van is more selective, and after heavy rain some are not passable at all, in which case your driver will get as close as the surface allows and no further. The more important local knowledge is about the sea rather than the road. Several of these beaches have a strong undertow and shelve steeply, and drowning incidents happen every season. Hotels here will tell you which end of their own beach is safe on a given day, and it is worth asking rather than assuming that calm-looking water is calm.

Three hours and forty minutes is long enough that the vehicle starts to matter, and almost all of it is at expressway speed. For two people the comfort sedan rather than the economy car is the upgrade we would actually defend here: quieter at a hundred kilometres an hour, and it makes a difference across nearly four hours. For four with luggage the comfort sedan takes a case each; for five or six the comfort van, chosen for space, with one caveat specific to Tangalle: it is the vehicle most likely to be stopped short by a soft sand lane at the very end. There is no train to Tangalle. The coastal line stops at Matara, thirty-five kilometres short, and the onward connection is a bus or a tuk-tuk on a road that takes as long as the whole expressway section. Expressway buses run to Matara and to Hambantota and have the same last-mile problem, with limited luggage space. For this destination the private transfer is not a comfort choice, it is the only sensible way to arrive, and the reason Tangalle stayed quiet for so long is precisely that this was true and the drive was twice as long.

The dry season on the south coast runs from December to April and that is when the sea here is at its most swimmable. From May to September the south-west monsoon reaches this far east in a weakened form: less rain than at Hikkaduwa, but a bigger swell on beaches that are already steep. The one genuinely time-bound thing on this coast is turtle nesting at Rekawa, fifteen minutes east of town, where five species come ashore at night through the year with a peak between April and July. It is a supervised, no-flash affair that starts after dark, which is worth knowing when you plan your arrival: landing in the afternoon leaves the evening free for it.
