Journey details

The 205 km figure is the most direct line: south-east out of Colombo through Avissawella and Ratnapura, the gem town, then along the foot of the hills past Pelmadulla and Balangoda before climbing to Haputale and Bandarawela and dropping into Ella. It is the quickest realistic route from the city. Some drivers prefer the Southern Expressway and the climb from Wellawaya, which is longer in kilometres but similar in time on a clear day. The scenic options go through the heart of the tea country instead: the A7 via Kitulgala, Hatton and Nuwara Eliya, or the Kandy road and the A5 over Ramboda, then down through Welimada to Ella. Both add distance and usually an hour or more, and make sense only if you want tea estates and waterfalls on the way. Tell us on WhatsApp which one you want.

The road

The first hour is the slowest per kilometre. The A4 out of Colombo through Nugegoda, Maharagama and Homagama is suburban almost all the way to Avissawella, and on a weekday morning it can take an hour to cover what looks like half that. Past Ratnapura the road opens up through Pelmadulla and Balangoda. The real climb begins after Belihuloya, where the road rises steeply towards Haldummulla and the Beragala junction in a run of tight bends with long drops on the valley side. Haputale sits on a ridge, and on a clear morning the view south stretches across the lowlands. From Bandarawela to Ella the road is narrow and full of tuk-tuks, and the last stretch into Ella village is congested in the afternoon, with little room to stop outside the guesthouses on the main street.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Five hours is the longest single transfer most visitors take in Sri Lanka, so comfort counts for more here than on a short hop. For two people, the comfort sedan is worth it over the economy sedan for the legroom and the softer ride on the climb to Haputale. The economy sedan suits up to three passengers travelling light who want the lowest price. For four or more, or anyone with large cases, the 6-seat van, and the 8-seat van for groups of seven or eight. Many Ella guesthouses sit up steep lanes off the main road; the driver gets as close as the lane allows, and a sedan gets closer than a van on the narrowest ones.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

The Colombo to Badulla train is the reason many people come to Ella, and the section between Nanu Oya and Ella is the one everyone photographs. From Colombo Fort, though, the whole ride takes about nine to ten hours, and reserved seats on the popular trains sell out weeks ahead in the dry season. Travellers who want the train without losing a whole day often send their luggage by car and ride only the Nanu Oya to Ella section, or break the trip with a night in Kandy or Nuwara Eliya. If you want to stop a night or two on the way, car hire with driver by the day may suit you better than a single transfer.

Best time to travel this route

Start at 06:00 or 06:30. You leave Colombo before the rush, reach the Haputale climb by late morning while the ridge is still clear, and arrive in Ella in the early afternoon with time for Little Adam’s Peak before dark. Mist rolls up the Haputale ridge on many afternoons. Ella and the Uva side are wettest with the north-east monsoon, roughly October to January, when heavy showers can slow the climb; February to April is usually the most settled. A 06:00 pickup is outside the night surcharge window, which applies to pickups between 22:00 and 05:00.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Colombo to Ella?

A private taxi from Colombo to Ella costs $125 (LKR 39,000) in an economy sedan (up to 3 passengers), $140 (LKR 45,000) in a comfort sedan (up to 4 passengers), $165 (LKR 51,500) in a comfort van (up to 6 passengers) and $195 (LKR 62,000) in an 8-seat van (up to 8 passengers). Prices checked on 4 October 2026. You pay the full price online by card when you book, with nothing to pay the driver; paying 50% online and the rest in cash on the day costs 10% more. A 15% night surcharge applies when pickup or arrival falls between 22:00 and 05:00, booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.

How long is the taxi from Colombo to Ella?

About 205 km and about five hours of driving without stops. Add an hour if you want lunch and a viewpoint on the way, more if you take the tea-country route through Nuwara Eliya.

Which way does the driver go?

By default the most direct line through Ratnapura, Balangoda and Haputale. If you want Kitulgala, Hatton and Nuwara Eliya, or the Kandy road over Ramboda, ask when you book; they are slower but take you through the main tea estates.

Is the train faster than a taxi from Colombo to Ella?

No. From Colombo Fort the train takes about nine to ten hours, twice the road time. It is a wonderful ride, and many people do only the Nanu Oya to Ella section while their bags travel by car.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. A lunch stop in Ratnapura or Balangoda, a viewpoint near Haputale, or a tea factory on the Nuwara Eliya route are all common. Short breaks are part of any long drive; planned visits are arranged on WhatsApp after you book.

What does the fixed price include?

Everything for the vehicle: fuel, tolls, parking and the driver. It is a price per vehicle, not per person, and it is shown before you book. Between 15 December and 15 January a 10% high-season rate applies, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.

How do we pay, and can we cancel?

The full price by card online, with nothing to pay the driver in Ella; or 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver, which costs 10% more. We confirm on WhatsApp. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
