A taxi from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya covers about 160 km in about four hours, and it is really two journeys joined together. The first is getting out of the capital and across the hot, flat lowlands. The second is a long climb to almost 1,900 metres through tea country, where the air cools by around fifteen degrees and the road rarely runs straight for more than a few hundred metres. This page is for departures from the city itself: a hotel in Fort, Colombo 3, 4 or 7, or further south at Mount Lavinia. Flying in? The airport transfer has its own page.

Journey details
There are two broad ways up. The 160 km figure is the southern line: east out of Colombo to Avissawella, then the A7 through Kitulgala, Ginigathhena and Hatton, past Talawakele and Nanu Oya into Nuwara Eliya. The other heads north-east towards Kandy, leaves the main road at Peradeniya and climbs the A5 through Gampola, Pussellawa and Ramboda. It is longer in kilometres, and on some days the two come out close in time. Your driver picks the quicker road on the day. If you would rather see the Ramboda tea estates or the Hatton waterfalls, say so when you book and that is the road you take. Allow about four hours without stops, and closer to five with a tea factory and a waterfall.
The road
Leaving Colombo is the part nobody plans for. From Fort or Colombo 3 on a weekday morning, the A4 High Level Road through Nugegoda and Maharagama can take the best part of an hour to clear, and drivers often use the Outer Circular Expressway to skip the worst of the suburbs. Past Avissawella the road is busy but flat. The climb starts after Kitulgala, where the A7 follows the Kelani river through rubber and then tea. Between Ginigathhena and Hatton the road is narrow, cut into the hillside, and shared with buses that take the whole width on the bends. Above Hatton, the viewpoints over St Clair’s and Devon falls sit right beside the road near Talawakele. On the Kandy side, the equivalent stretch is the chain of hairpins below Ramboda, where loaded tea lorries set the pace and overtaking is rare.
Recommended vehicle for this route
The economy sedan takes three passengers and is fine for a couple with two cases, but four hours with two of them spent on bends is where the comfort sedan’s softer ride and extra legroom earn their place. For a family of four or five, the 6-seat van gives everyone a window and keeps the luggage out of the cabin. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. Whatever you book, keep a warm layer in the bag at your feet: Colombo is hot and humid, Nuwara Eliya evenings are cold enough for a fire.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
The train is the famous way into the hills and worth doing once. The main line from Colombo Fort to Badulla climbs past Kandy to Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, a short tuk-tuk ride below the town. It is slow, most of a day from Colombo, and reserved seats on the scenic trains sell out weeks ahead in season. Plenty of travellers split it: the car carries the luggage and they ride the train, or they go by road to Kandy or Hatton and take only the most scenic stretch of the line. The taxi wins when you have bags, a hotel check-in to make, or want to stop at a tea factory on the way.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Colombo early, ideally soon after 05:00, and certainly before 07:00. You clear the city before the morning rush, reach the hills while they are clear, and arrive by late morning. From early afternoon, mist settles on the upper road, and rain is possible in the hills in any month; the Hatton side is wettest from May to September with the south-west monsoon. April is the season in Nuwara Eliya itself, around the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when the town fills with Sri Lankan visitors. Pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, so a start just after 05:00 gets the empty roads at the normal price.

How far is Colombo to Nuwara Eliya by taxi, and how long does it take?
About 160 km and about four hours without stops, closer to five with a tea factory and a waterfall.
Do we go via Kandy or via Hatton?
The shorter line is the A7 through Avissawella and Hatton, past Kitulgala and the St Clair’s and Devon falls. The Kandy road over Ramboda is longer but has the famous tea estate hairpins. Tell us your preference; otherwise the driver takes the quicker road on the day.
Is the taxi price fixed?
Yes. The price is per vehicle and shown before you book, with fuel, tolls, parking and the driver included. Only the night surcharge and the high-season rate from 15 December to 15 January change it, and both appear before you pay. Booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
Should we take the train instead?
For the experience, do it at least once. As transport it is slow, most of a day to Nanu Oya, and seats sell out. Many people send their luggage by car and ride only the scenic section of the line.
Can we stop at a tea factory or a waterfall?
Yes. There are working tea factories on both roads, the falls near Talawakele on the Hatton side and Ramboda Falls on the Kandy side. Arrange them on WhatsApp once you have booked.
How do we pay, and what if our plans change?
You pay the full price by card online and we confirm the booking on WhatsApp, so there is nothing to pay the driver on the day. If you prefer, you can pay 50% online and the rest in cash to the driver; that option costs 10% more. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, and the driver waits 15 minutes at your hotel at no charge.
