Journey details
There are two ways north. The usual one leaves the city on the Kandy road, picks up the E04 Central Expressway towards Kurunegala, and continues on the A6 through Kurunegala and Galewela to Dambulla, before the short run east to Sigiriya. That is the line behind the 185 km on this page. The other goes via Kandy, then north on the A9 through Matale to Dambulla. It is longer and slower, and worth it only if you want to see Kandy or a Matale spice garden on the way. Allow about four hours on the direct road, and about five with a visit to the Dambulla cave temple, which sits right on the route, around twenty-five minutes before Sigiriya.
The road
The slowest part is the first stretch out of Colombo on the A1 through Kelaniya, Kiribathgoda and Kadawatha, a continuous strip of shops, junctions and buses that is at its worst between 07:30 and 09:30. Once on the expressway the pace changes completely. Kurunegala is the one town you cannot avoid, and its centre, below the great rock outcrops, is busy in the middle of the day. From Dambulla the road narrows through Inamaluwa and turns towards Sigiriya through scrub jungle with signed elephant crossings. Hotels here are spread out, around Sigiriya village, Kimbissa, the lake roads and towards Habarana, often on unlit gravel lanes a few kilometres off the tarmac, and many have no address that a navigation app finds. Send us the hotel name and a location pin on WhatsApp and the driver will find it, but arriving in daylight makes that much easier.
Recommended vehicle for this route
Four hours on mostly flat, straight road is gentle in any vehicle, so choose by passengers and luggage rather than ride. The economy sedan suits two or three people travelling light. The comfort sedan is worth it for a couple with large cases or anyone who wants more legroom for the day. The 6-seat van suits families and the 8-seat van groups of up to eight. If you plan several days in the cultural triangle, with Polonnaruwa, Minneriya or Anuradhapura, look at car hire with driver by the day rather than a string of separate taxis: the same car and driver stay with you.

Train, bus or private taxi?
An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.
There is no railway to Sigiriya. The nearest station is Habarana, on the line towards Trincomalee and Batticaloa, with few trains a day and a road transfer at the end. Buses run from Colombo to Dambulla, cheaply and often, but you then need a local bus or a tuk-tuk for the last stretch, and there is little room for luggage. For a backpacker with time, that works. For anyone with suitcases, or heading to one of the hotels deep in the forest, a taxi from Colombo is the practical option rather than the luxury one.
Best time to travel this route
Leave Colombo before 07:00 or after 09:30. An early start puts you in Sigiriya by late morning, with time for the Dambulla cave temple before the midday heat, or for lunch and a rest before Pidurangala at sunset. Avoid arriving after dark: elephants cross the Sigiriya and Habarana roads at dusk and the hotel lanes are unlit. The cultural triangle is hot and dry from May to September; heavier rain comes with the north-east monsoon from about October to January, which makes the rock steps slippery but rarely affects the drive. Sigiriya itself is best climbed at opening, around 07:00, the morning after you arrive.

How far is Colombo to Sigiriya, and how long does the taxi take?
About 185 km and about four hours without stops, via Kurunegala and Dambulla. With the Dambulla cave temple on the way, allow about five.
Can we stop at the Dambulla cave temple?
Yes, it is directly on the route. Allow about an hour for the climb and the caves. Shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes come off at the entrance, so keep suitable clothes in the car rather than the boot.
Can we go via Kandy instead?
Yes, through Kandy and Matale on the A9. It is longer and slower, so it suits people who want a stop in Kandy or at a spice garden. Ask when you book and we plan the timing.
Our hotel is outside Sigiriya village. Can you drop us there?
Yes, anywhere around Sigiriya, Kimbissa, the lakes or Habarana. Many lodges sit on gravel lanes with no street address, so send the hotel name and a location pin on WhatsApp.
Is the price per person?
No, it is a fixed price per vehicle, shown before you book, with fuel, tolls, parking and the driver included. Pickups between 22:00 and 05:00 carry a 15% night surcharge, and booking more than 14 days ahead takes 5% off.
How do we pay?
