Prices checked on 4 October 2026.

A taxi from Trincomalee to Sigiriya takes about two and a half hours for 105 km, in a private car at a fixed price per vehicle, collected from your hotel in Trincomalee or Uppuveli and dropped at your hotel in Sigiriya. Most people take it in one of two situations: at the end of a beach stay, heading inland to start the cultural triangle, or after flying into the east and working their way back west. Either way the timing of the day matters more than the drive itself, because Sigiriya is best climbed early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and you will want to arrive with one of those in mind.

Journey details

The driver leaves Trincomalee on the A6, past the inner harbour at China Bay and through Thambalagamuwa, then crosses the dry zone south-west to Kantale and its great reservoir. Beyond Kantale the road runs long and straight through forest and paddy to the Gal Oya junction and on to Habarana, where you leave the A6 and take the local road west into Sigiriya. Hotels around Sigiriya are spread over several kilometres of lanes, some of them gravel tracks into the jungle, and the driver takes you to the door. If you want to see Polonnaruwa on the way, the ancient city lies south-east of Habarana on the A11: it is a real detour, adding about an hour of driving plus your visit, and is worth it only if it is not already on your plan from Sigiriya. Without stops, count on two and a half hours.

The road

Leaving Trincomalee is easy in the morning: the town is small and the traffic is mostly tuk-tuks and buses heading for the market. The only slow stretch before Habarana is Kantale, where the market street narrows and buses stop in the road. After that the A6 is wide, straight and quiet enough that the main hazards are speed and wildlife. The section through the forest near Habarana is an elephant corridor, and in the late afternoon you may find a bull standing in the verge. Drivers slow, keep their distance and never stop to let passengers feed them. The final approach to Sigiriya is a narrow rural road where village dogs, cyclists and the odd water buffalo share the tarmac, and the rock appears suddenly above the trees a few kilometres before the village.

Recommended vehicle for this route

Coming off a beach stay, people usually have more luggage than they set out with, and wet towels and snorkels tend to travel loose. For a couple, the economy sedan is enough on this flat road; if you have three large cases or want room to spread out, the comfort sedan. Families should go straight to the 6-seat comfort van, which also handles the gravel tracks to some Sigiriya hotels better than a low sedan. Groups of seven or eight need the 8-seat van. If you are planning Polonnaruwa or Dambulla over the following days, the larger cars are more comfortable for a full day of sightseeing, and child seats are free on request.

Train, bus or private taxi?

An honest comparison. A private transfer is not always the right answer.

A train from Trincomalee runs west to Habarana, the closest station to Sigiriya, but services are few and slow, and you still need a tuk-tuk for the last stretch with your bags. Buses up the A6 are frequent as far as Habarana or Dambulla and very cheap, but they are crowded and luggage goes where it fits. Ride-hailing apps work in Trincomalee town at best patchily and not at all for a trip inland. For a couple travelling light and willing to change twice, the bus is possible; for anyone with suitcases, children or an afternoon climb planned, the private car is the straightforward choice.

Best time to travel this route

Leave Trincomalee around 08:00 and you reach Sigiriya by mid-morning, check in, rest through the heat, then climb Pidurangala for the sunset view of the rock, with Sigiriya itself at opening time the next morning. Alternatively, a 12:30 departure brings you in for a late-afternoon climb of Sigiriya, but the ticket office closes in the late afternoon, so ask your driver to keep the stops short. From May to September both ends are dry and hot; from October to January the north-east monsoon makes Trincomalee wet and the A6 occasionally slow near Kantale. Night trips (pickup or arrival between 22:00 and 05:00) add 15%.
